milb.com: Swindle happy to make big leagues

One of my favorite minor leaguers is going to the bigs - R.J. Swindle. In four (organized) minor league seasons, he’s posted a career ERA of 1.54 in 181 innings for three organizations: the Red Sox (released after a 1.94 ERA in 51 innings his rookie year, due to concerns about his back), the Yankees (who he gave a 0.59 ERA in 46 innings two years later, as he had to play indy ball in the intervening time), and now the Phillies (who signed him as a minor league free agent) - who have suddenly begun to promote him pretty aggressively.

He’s got no velocity, hasn’t had any for as long as I’ve heard of him (I was surprised Boston tabbed him as early as they did (14th round), despite his earning some All-America nods as a collegian), but does throw a nifty curve and change combination, as well as whatever other junk comes to his mind on a given day. When I saw him the other day, he topped out at 83 (IIRC) on Durham’s (reportedly slow) gun but looked quicker - of course, this type almost always does. Didn’t mess around with arm angles as much as I remember him doing in the past - just set, threw, and generally made the hitter look pretty bad (Dan Johnson notwithstanding).

I’d be reluctant to call any guy with his lack of velocity much of a prospect, but he looks more impressive to me than, say, Javier Lopez or Craig Breslow (both of whom I like or have liked in the past), and I certainly wouldn’t write off the possibility of his sustaining a career in the bigs as a LOOGY/mop-up type ... and there ain’t nothing wrong with that.

I'm pretty excited to see this guy, these kind of guys are fun to root for. The Phils already have one of those in Coste. The guys over at Beerleaguer have been pimping him all year.

Whoa. He got called up? Awesome.

About the Durham gun Der-K, I usually don't trust it and I've found it too fast in the past but mostly wildly inconsistent but I saw a Team USA game there last weekend and it had Miami's Chris Hernandez sitting where he usually does (86-89) and when San Diego's A.J Griffin entered it showed the same velo (89-91) as a scout's gun. Maybe they've fixed that POS.

Yeah!

You gotta mention his K/BB ratios here. 37:5 last year at Lakewood. 20:3 last year at Clearwater. 16:1 this year at Reading. 15:4 this year at Allentown. 56:4 at Lowell in 2004, as a 20-year-old.

Career totals, 323:60 -- including the two years he spent as a starter in the Northern League.

All right, all I'm hoping for is for him to surpass Anthony Shumaker and Jim Crowell in the all-time index of "guys who got a shot with the Phillies".

I wouldn't get too excited about Swindle...yet. The Phillies are being oddly secretive about this, but it appears Swindle is only on the roster until Happ (or someone else?) is called up tomorrow to replace Myers in the rotation. Clay Condrey has been away on personal business, so it looks like Swindle is just up in an emergency situation.

Still, it's a nice story. The Phillies also have 30 yo Brian Mazone stashed away, a possible Moyer clone who has been routinely "dominating" AA and AAA the last few years. It must be killing Gillick to rely on guys like Coste and Swindle instead of his preferred 5-toolers and hard-throwing righties.

Didn't Mazone get called up for his first ML start, only to have the game get rained out and then was immediately sent back down to S-WB?

Yep.

Let's see, Tim LaHay or whatever his name was, Mazone, and now Swindle...if Padraic is correct, that's three pitchers who have been brought up and down by the Phillies this year without being allowed to actually make their major league debuts.

How come Larry Yount has a BB-ref page, but not these guys?

Larry Yount appeared in an official game. I think there should be a list of guys who have officially been on active rosters but never appeared in games. In doing some research I came across a guy in Royals history who had done that - I'm sure there are tons throughout history. That's even more tragic than Moonlight Graham IMO. At least Graham got to play.

Yount actually "appeared" in an MLB game. He was called in, then got hurt throwing warmup pitches. These other guys never got called into a game.

EDIT-What he said.

Ouch, that hurts worse than Mazone, I'd think. But I guess the consolation of having a BBRef page almost makes up for it.

Tim LaHay or whatever his name was

Gives a new meaning to "Left Behind" I guess.

And I think the Mazone rainout was 2006, but yeah, it still sucks.

Sadly, Swindle was sent back down last night to make room for Happ. With those peripherals, he should get a shot at some point when Romero implodes.
