Milwaukee J-S blog: Capuano headed for another Tommy John

It appears Brewers left-hander Chris Capuano is headed for the second “Tommy John” reconstructive elbow surgery of his career.

Assistant general manager Gord Ash told me that Capuano began experiencing discomfort in his elbow during throwing drills Monday in Phoenix. He will visit orthopedic surgeon James Andrews tomorrow and could have the surgery as soon as Thursday, which would knock him out of surgery for approximately a year.

Capuano began experiencing discomfort in the elbow in spring training and an MRI revealed at least a partial tear of the ligament.

Speaking of that, Tommy John becomes a senior citizen next week.

Hey, that's not a bad guarantee if you can get it.

I believe the Dbacks have now officially won the Richie Sexson trade.

Let's not go that far Levski, but it's not like it was as great for Milwaukee as some people like to say.

I'm sad to see Capuano go. I liked him a lot the first year and a half he was in Milwaukee. That stupid, vainglorious attempt to get him to 20 wins in 2005 soured me on him (and even more on Yost), but I still thought he was a nice player to have around.

Capuano's 2006 stats were the same as his 2005 ones except that he halved his walks. I thought that heralded some really good years to come.

Just for fun: A 126 OPS+ year out of Richie Sexson, and compensation picks that turned into Micah Owings and Matt Torra for 122 and 112 OPS+ years from Overbay before flipping him for the one good season of both David Bush's and Gabe Gross's career, two good years of Capuano (107 and 113 ERA+), about two crappy years of Capuano, a decent third of a season from Spivey, a bad backup catcher in Moeller, a crappy utility infielder in Counsell, and a terrible LOOGy in de la Rosa.

Just eyeballing it, I'd say if Owings gives Arizona two more years at around last year's level I'd take their end of the deal. But that's because I don't really see any value in trading for spare parts like Moeller and Counsell.

Hey, just a minute, Sparkles! The Brewers got over a year of Tony Graffanino for Jorge de la Rosa. You just can't put a price on that kind of value.

Seriously though, Sexson played 23 games for Arizona. The comp picks are a good, and rarely-mentioned, point though.

I actually misread how long Sexson played for Arizona. Bump it up to three more years for Owings. Back down to two if the Brewers resign Spivey at any point.
