Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel: Yost won’t give up on [Dave] Bush

Manager Ned Yost said Saturday that he is not considering moving right-hander Dave Bush from the rotation to the bullpen to work out command problems that have plagued him throughout the season. Bush had another rough outing the previous evening against San Diego, getting pounded for nine hits and seven runs in five innings in an 8-6 loss to the Padres. He fell to 3-5 with a 6.13 ERA…
...
During the club’s recent slide, the starting pitching in general has slipped. But Yost said there has been no talk of calling up right-hander Yovani Gallardo, the Brewers’ top pitching prospect… Yost said calling up Gallardo and putting Bush in the bullpen for a spell to work out his problems is not a good idea because Bush has experienced most of his command problems while pitching from the stretch.

“If he goes to the pen, he’s going to have to pitch from the stretch all the time,” Yost said.

Ryan Braun Watch: 3-4, HR, SB (in his second game for the Brewers)
Lead at 5 games, and that 10-game homestand that starts Monday - signalling the end of the 13-of-16 on-the-road stretch -  can’t get here soon enough for the Brewers…

The Cubs will have played 13 of 16 on the road by the end of play Sunday, too. Come to think of it, the Brewers seem to be following the Cubs almost exactly lately. Wonder how long that continues.

As bad as the Cubs have been in close games, and as mediocre as they've often looked generally, I can't be too unhappy to be within 5 games of the top.

Leaving him in to give up all those extra runs in his first few starts of the year was a different sort of giving up on him, it could be said.

The first start of the year he actually gave up all the runs right away. Six runs in his first inning of 2007, then he pitched great the rest of that game.

Nonetheless, he's been missing in the strike zone way too much this year - and a few of his more recent efforts haven't been 'left-in-too-long' meltdowns - and he doesn't have the velocity as a starter (probably 86-91 or so w/o a ton of movement on his FB) to get away with it.

I hope that he can get things straightened out, but if Sheets' finger problem isn't serious, they've got to consider the Gallardo option sooner or later. It's not like they'd be rushing him up - he's blowing people away at AAA.

Now, if they're more worried about Sheets than they're publicly admitting - and are keeping Gallardo set aside for that - that's a different story.

I was a little surprised to see Villanueva get into the game yesterday. They must be confident that Sheets will be able to go on Tuesday.

If Zambrano and Sheets are both actually injured, the NL Central race could turn into quite the midget-wrestling match (if it isn't already).

Man, that JP sure has no clue what he's doing.

That's pretty much normal. Both teams play the Braves and Marlins at home this week, and for almost the entire months of July and August they play virtually the same set of teams. It's not uncommon in this day and age to see pairings of teams; the Braves and Marlins are often paired, as are the Phillies and Mets, the Dodgers and Padres, the Giants and Diamondbacks, etc.
