Minor League Manager Has Major League Meltdown (Video)

Definitely not a well...uhh, manager.

Phillip Wellman, manager of Atlanta Braves affiliate Mississippi Braves, apparently had enough of the umpires, springing out of the dugout to let his temper flare. After a nose-to-nose argument with the home plate ump, Wellman completely covered home plate in dirt. He then made his way up the third base line, where he ripped third base out of the dirt and hurled it into the outfield.

As if that wasn’t enough retribution for Wellman, the manager then got on all fours and crawled toward he pitcher’s mound like a special ops commando, grabbing the pitcher’s rosin bag, holding it to his mouth and tossing it toward the home plate umpire as if it were a grenade.

Awesome. I think my favorite part is the ####-eating grin on the fielder's face near the end of the video.

How about his very careful covering of home plate, then drawing a (much bigger) plate around it?

This guy ripped off Yaz. He even lifted the smoothing out part.

October 18, 2006 CHATTANOOGAN: Former Lookouts Manager Phillip Wellman To Manage 2007 Mississippi Braves
Wellman, who was a colorful manager with the Lookouts, was known for his unique rants-and-ravings whenever an umpire ejected him from a game.

I don't see why every manager doesn't behave like this jackass. It gets you free pub on ESPN. Heck, this guy will probably be on Good Morning America Monday morning.

America has done a great job encouraging #############.

It's also minor league ball, so a little bit of showmanship always helps up the entertainment value...

Shouldn't he have saved this act for a home game?

I sure hope the new baseball channel overruns us with .. "Minor league ball". I think that would be awesome. I think I would quit going to work.

I liked the bow!

I was at the game....

Wellman put on a show. He was a beloved manager IN Chattanooga for numerous years recently. His "performances" have always been the stuff of legend. One time when he a 3rd base ump called a runner out at 3rd base Wellman "recreated" the play twice (with the slide) to see if the ump would change his mind ala instant replay. I don't know him personally but he really is loved by the fans in Chattanooga.

Sadly this time I think it backfired on him a bit. Same game two innings later his pitcher Villa is found with "something" in his hat and something on the ball. After a lengthy discussion Villa gets ejected, then promptly goes throws the ball over the left field wall. Joey Devine, who's not even in the game, decides its a good idea to show up umpires too (the established big leaguer that he is) and comes out of the dugout to tell the umps what he thinks of them and gets thrown out. One of their middle infielders Rozema keeps chirping and gets run too. Honestly about 2 or 3 more Braves could have gotten thrown out, and Wellman's little show probably was not a great example of acceptable behavior for the rest of the "little Braves."

I wouldn't be surprised if the Braves' brass comes down on him for this, especially for how his team acted later in the game. It's certainly not "the Braves way".

What was the play that actually set him off? I assume it had something to do with the ump's strike zone?
