MLB: A-Rod ties Reggie on all-time homer list

Between Reggie being miffed and the Grammys dropping Polka as a category. Tough times.

Jackson expressed some of his feelings about Rodriguez’s pursuit in a Feb. 25 chat with reporters, acknowledging that Rodriguez would soon “blow by me like I’m standing still.”

Jackson chuckled at that comment, but the Hall of Fame slugger said that he also has a problem with players who played in the era of performance-enhancing substances surpassing him on hallowed lists.

Six players have now hit the 563-homer mark since Jackson’s retirement, though among them, only Rodriguez has admitted to using performance-enhancing drugs.

“I guess I get angry sometimes,” Jackson said then. “I’ve been reprimanded by the Commissioner [Bud Selig] and the president of our team. I pleaded with them to say, ‘Try to understand. I’m personally involved. I’m selfish today and made some negative comments.’

“I’m hurt and bewildered. I don’t know if we’ll ever get through it. We’re all hurt, and it’s in our lifetimes.”

But greenies are awesome.

Thurman could have stirred the drink good, if only he'd had some nandrolone phenpropionate.

Is it just assumed that Jackson took greenies because he played in that era or is there concrete evidence? I know that the other Bay Area team used Red Juice, but never heard anything about the Yanks or A's using anything other than cocaine. I think that Dayn is a Jacksonologist.

Has anyone mentioned greenies?

Why stop with greenies? Jackson strikes me as one of the more likely people to have tried steroids in the 70s - along with Pete Rose. Both of them had some, shall we say, interesting houseguests.

nah, jackson did the same thing as Empoli's 40 something keeper and drank 14 shots of espresso before every game...

Pete Rose said "What's a greenie?" and he was under oath when he said it. What more do you vultures want?

So, it is okay to accuse Reggie of using without any supporting evidence, but the minute someone says something says something about Arod...

Reggie just did it with a talking candy bar.

At least A-Rod never tried to kill the queen.

Grammys dropping Polka as a category

A big story in my neck of the woods, as Jimmy Sturr (who's won 18 of the 24 Polka Grammies) used to own my radio station, and I've hung out with him occasionally. Nice guy.

I think one has to be careful in discussing individual players. I think it's silly that players in the 70s and 80s get a pass from steroids. That doesn't mean it's fine to accuse one. We'll never know for sure, of course. But that is also true of many of the 90s and early 00s players that the media like to raise questions about. If it's okay to say that 90s and 00s numbers are suspect due to steroids, there is no reason not to question the numbers in the 70s and 80s as well.

who'd have thought that such a team-first guy as Reggie would be concerned about individual achievements.

I hadn't realized that Palmeiro had passed Reggie on the HR list.

And no, Reggie shouldn't be accused without evidence (although greenie usage does seem to have been near universal in those days based on the stories). But I think it's one thing to accuse someone in a "this ####### shouldn't be voted into the HoF" way (which we often see around here ... and, yes, there's a lot of animosity on display) vs. a case where one player is calling out others without evidence.

That is pointing out that we have as much reason to suspect Jackson of at least greenie usage and maybe more (I have no idea who his houseguests were) as we do for steroid use by many of the current sluggers is fair in my opinion.

But also fair enough -- the guys tied or ahead of Jackson are AROD (admitted usage), Palmeiro (Canseco and a positive test), Sosa (an alleged positive), Griffey (clean as a baby's bottom for sure!), McGwire (his brother and Canseco) and Bonds (BALCO). It's not like he's been passed by Thome (yet) or Thomas.

Cool -- Frank Thomas is tied with Ted Williams and Willie McCovey at 521. That's a nice trio of hitters.
