It would be nice if the A's gave Crosby a call and let him know where he stood, rather than hearing about stuff through the media. I know they don't owe it to him, per se, but it's got to be pretty demoralizing to hear nothing from the front office and hear all sorts of rumors about how they're shopping around for a replacement.
What are they going to tell him, "We're shopping around for your replacement. If we can't find anyone better, we'll be forced to go with you."? It's the truth, but it would be odd to call a guy up and tell him that. It's bad enough he has to hear it in the media, but to hear it to his face would probably be even worse.
Sure, but why would anybody take that off the A's hands when they could wait for him to clear and sign him for a lot less?
How's his defense these days?
If he's got any sort of intelligence he knows already, he doesn't need someone to tell him that he's not performing well.
FAIL.
No. In the case of outright waivers, the A's are still on the hook for the money.
the Orioles signed Cesar Izturis on a 2 year/$6 million deal like 10 days ago, why would they turn around and take Crosby? anyway we have enough dead contracts on our payroll right now ($6 million for Danys Baez - ugh)
Crosby won't do well in July or August.
Right. Plus he was programmed by the A's to clog the bases with walks. I was serious, though--given the Reds' SS situation, I think claiming Crosby and talking to the A's about it was something the Reds should have done.
No. In the case of outright waivers, the A's are still on the hook for the money.
Are you saying that if a player is claimed off of outright waivers the original team is responsible for the full contract? If so, I am pretty sure that isn't the case. Manny would have been picked up in a second off of outright waiver in 2003 if the claiming team didn't have to pay his salary.
Irrevocable Outright Waivers
A club that wishes to remove a player from its 40-man roster but keep him in its minor-league system must first place him on outright or special waivers. Outright waivers are not revocable, so a player claimed on outright waivers may not be pulled back by his original club. When a player in the middle of a guaranteed contract is claimed on waivers, the claiming club pays $20,000 and a pro-rated portion of the league minimum salary, with the original club remaining responsible for paying the rest of the money due under the contract. A club may not request outright waivers on a player with a complete no-trade clause or on a player ten-and-five rights.
Is the difference a change in the CBA or the difference in service time?
In the sense that his playing 140+ games cost the A's dearly this year, yes. Using VORP/600PA and UZR/150G, Crosby was -1.8 runs relative to replacement level in his mostly healthy season of 2008. By this metric he was more than 30 runs worse than Orlando Cabrera and more than 20 runs worse than Nick Punto.
The one year the A's made the playoffs during the Crosby era, he was injured for most of the second half and Scutaro put up a near .800 OPS in his absence. He's so bad that no matter even his most vocal detractors actually overrate him.
Maybe they just put him on the list of guys always waiving at low and outside third strikes.
You're applying logic to the Orioles' general management?
Case in point.
give me one bad decision Andy MacPhail has made since becoming GM (before the 2008 season). I'll give you 3 good decisions right now:
1) trading Miguel Tejada for Luke Scott, Troy Patton, and 3 prospects
2) trading Erik Bedard for Adam Jones, Chris Tillman, George Sherrill, and 2 prospects
3) trading backup catcher Ramon Hernandez (salary $8 million) and $3 million in cash for utility man Ryan Freel (salary $4 million) and 2 prospects
my point was, Danys Baez was signed before the 2007 season if I'm not mistaken - a different GM.
