MLB: Beane to pursue youth rather than spending on free agents

I don’t wanna put no money down
I don’t wanna grow up

Those players, he suggested, would have to be up-and-comers. He seems to have little to no interest in down-siders such as Vladimir Guerrero, Miguel Tejada and Carlos Delgado.

Only if Plans A and B fall through will Beane dive into what’s considered a fairly shallow free-agent pool.

“I think our first goal this winter is, the positions we need to fill, fill them with young guys,” he said. “If we get into January and we haven’t acquired a young player, then we’ll consider a guy to fill in temporarily. The first goal is to find a young guy. Our long-term goal is to create a team with continuity that is going to be here for a number of years

..."We’ve always been proud of our player development history here,” Beane said. “Really, if you look at when the club has been good, this has been a precursor to many of those good years. This is the fourth [Rookie of the Year] we’ve had since ‘98, and usually following that we’ve had some pretty good success.”

With success, of course, comes excitement. And Beane knows that the patience of Oakland’s small but passionate fan base is wearing thin on the heels of three consecutive losing seasons.

“Ultimately when you start winning games is when they get really interested. I’m aware of that,” Beane said. “So the next step is to continue to bring guys like Andrew up here. That’s our responsibility, and I know the deal.

“To sign a couple free agents and have three or four press conferences during the winter doesn’t get it done,” Beane said. “We’re going to be disciplined.”

It's almost like young home grown players at pre-FA (and even better pre-arb) prices are a market inefficiency that never goes out of style.

Eh, who'd read that book.

Let the kids play! I'm fine with this. I still hope they bring Duke back, but otherwise there's nothing out there in free agency that's going to save this team. They were fun to watch again when they let the kids play at the end of last year. Let's just roll with that.

re: [4]

I once won $50 off a friend who was 100% certain the gay Billy Bean and the GM Billy Beane were the same guy.

I could have taken him for $500, he was so sure, but I didn't want to ruin the friendship.

Have you ever seen them in a room together at the same time?

And if so, what were they doing?

I am shocked, shocked that the A's won't be in the bidding on Jason Bay and Chone Figgins this winter.

The motivation for signing O-Cab and trading for Holliday was twofold; if they're contenders, great! Those two guys likely would've been a good reason for it. If the A's sucked, they could trade them at the deadline and collect more young players. I think the second should still apply to this offseason. I know they can't spend a lot of dough but I still think they should still look at guys who may be Type A or B free agents after 2010. Their first pick is still protected, and they won't lose anything by signing a Type B. There's a lot of relievers out there who could be cheap and bring draft picks when they leave. Oakland still needs to keep bringing in young players into the system, and that requires at least a little bit of money.

But didn't they end up trading away more for Holliday than they got in return? In other words... wouldn't they have been better off not trading for Holliday, keeping Gonzalez and dealing Street at mid-season for a modest return? Isn't Gonzalez + whatever they got in return for Street better than Wallace, or am I way off?

I wouldn't mind Scutaro on a 2 year deal, Dock, as he can play 2nd/SS/3rd and because he's AWESOME! Other than that, with the way things are going for free agents that are type A or type B, I wouldn't take the chance. If you offer arbitration to them, and the market is anything like last year, they'll just accept. The A's bullpen is loaded, anyway. The team could use a reliable starter to hedge against the unpredictability of the young pitchers, and they could use a short term 3rd baseman, but I don't see much out there this offseason.

Who isn't? With Tampa, the Yankees, and the Red Sox to deal with, even KC is likely to make the playoffs before Toronto! Does that mean we shouldn't be allowed to have nice things?

Besides, do you really want to be bragging about finishing 22 games back, rather than finishing 28 games back?

And why no one is interested in Wells.

Nah, I don't think you're off. The package they traded for Holliday > the package they got for him. But as I said, the purpose was twofold, since Billy was trying to contend. I still think the A's should be in the mindset this offseason to acquire players with the intention of flipping them down the line, either by trade or with the draft picks.

EDIT: Shooty, I was considering the old-school Moneyball approach of acquiring relievers and increasing their superficial value but you're right; I forgot how loaded the bullpen is. Still, a team like the Pirates could do well to sign guys like Kiko Calero and Duaner Sanchez, both of whom could easily be good enough to be at least Type B's.

According to Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune, the Cubs have agreed in principle on a two-year contract with John Grabow.
The two sides were able to come to an agreement before Chicago's exclusivity window expired. An official announcement could come later today, but Grabow is expected to receive $7.5 million over two years.

Speaking of relief pitchers...I don't want Oakland doing anything like this. Grabow is all right, I guess, but that seems like a hefty commitment to mediocrity.

Speaking of Scutaro, why in the world was he traded in the first place? Was it a favor to Billy's BFF?

No kidding. $3.75M per for 7 K and 4.5 BB per 9. Seems like he's lucked into some shiny ERAs.

Pass.

The A's didn't want to go to arbitration with him. Billy thought he was set with Ellis/Crosby/Chavez. Write a ####### book about that Michael Lewis! I like Billy, but he's had some brain farts the last few years. Letting John Baker go for nothing is another one. John Baker Home Run Maker, come back to us!

Oakland already had Crosby and Ellis in the starting spots, and a decent selection of backups available. At the time, Scutaro really didn't look like anything special, to the point where his arrival in Toronto was greeted with the reaction of "Why the hell is JP trading for another damn utility infielder."

Based on the past couple seasons, it just honestly looks like a lot of people misjudged Scutaro's skills.

I figured that but he didn't even cost Toronto that much....Oakland didn't want to pay a versatile guy with a lot of plate discipline for 2 years/$2.65M?

The team is finally free (well, almost) of the paradox that has bedeviled them for several years: how do you upgrade your team when the two positions that have been killing you - third base and shortstop - are where you thought you had your best players and were set. Chavez was having a HOF-caliber career before he unexpectedly fell off a cliff. Crosby was a defensive whiz who could hit some too, good enough that the team decided to let Tejada depart; but then he became (or always had been?) unable to lay off down and away breaking stuff, and just got chewed up for it. So the team needs a third baseman and a shortstop, as usual. At least now, they don't have to agonize over whether Chavez and Crosby are going to be able to play, and at a high level. They won't. Time to finally move on. The million dollar question is, can Wallace play third base? If he can, he fills the teams biggest hole. I hope the guy is taking grounders someplace warm right now.
