MLB: Big Unit departs early with injury

Weeeee! Pitchers batting…more fun than hanging around the drug tunnels of Ibiza!

Randy Johnson walked off the mound in the fourth inning of the Giants’ series finale with the Houston Astros on Sunday at AT&T Park, leaving the game with what the team announced as a strained left shoulder.

Johnson flung his bat away mid-swing when he struck out in the third inning against the Astros’ Roy Oswalt and immediately grabbed his shoulder. He spoke with the Giants training staff afterward but came out to pitch the top of the fourth inning. He quickly allowed two solo home runs and committed a throwing error to allow the Astros’ fourth run of the game to score for a 4-0 Houston advantage.

Johnson grabbed his left shoulder again after his final miscue before gesturing that he needed manager Bruce Bochy to lift him from the game. Johnson lasted 3 2/3 innings. He threw 60 pitches and struck out two batters.

Hopefully it's nothing serious, but that doesn't sound good.

The in-game announcement was that it was just a shoulder strain... That doesn't sound too bad.

Jon Miller pointed out that if the Giants play their cards right (accounting for the all star break, etc), Unit could have something like 14 days of rest and miss only one start...

Even if the team somehow immediately MRI'd him, immediately got back the results and saw what looks like the stripped-off rims of truck tires you see lying on the side of the highway where his labrum used to be, they would still announce in-game, and reaffirm after the game and again tomorrow morning, that it's a 'shoulder strain'. That's just SOP.

Yup.

Obviously nobody knows what it is at this point. They're going to see how he feels tomorrow, and probably do an MRI then no matter how he says he feels.

The MRI might not say much though...guy been pitching as long as him has to have a shredded shoulder I would think.

Trey Hillman would put Randy out for 125 in the next start

No, obviously Johnson is fine and will pitch without pain for the rest of the season.

Can't a man have a little optimism?

To be honest, though, the first thing I thought of when Johnson started grimacing was the way that Nolan Ryan finally retired...

Who gives a fuck about Randy Johnson? What about my man Chien Ming Wang? He's got the mother of all "strained" shoulders.

sure was weird to see him throwing a "fast"ball that topped out at 89-90

something very funny about the Wang and the Unit being, uh, pulled early

And often, at least with regard to Wang.
