MLB: Cano benched for lack of hustle on fielding play

No lack of Hustle in Washington Heights...eh, Robby.

Robinson Cano stopped in his tracks and stared at a rolling baseball, as it headed into the Yankee Stadium outfield. Joe Girardi punished him with more time to watch idly.

The Yankees’ second baseman was pulled from Sunday’s game after the fourth inning and benched after he did not chase a ball hit by the Rays’ Cliff Floyd. Girardi cited a lack of effort on the ground ball, which Floyd hustled into a double.

“This is a game where you have to play hard every day,” Girardi said. “There are people that are hungry that want your job. Our job is to play hard and give your best every day. That’s what we ask, and you need to do it on a daily basis, because there’s people that want to do it.”

..."They’ve got a better view than where I was,” Cano said. “I would say they’re doing the right thing.”

Asked what he would do if he had a second chance, Cano said he would “go out and get the ball, and show them that I’d still like to be there and help the team and I’ve got a passion for the game. It’s not that I just see the ball and I’m lazy.”

Well, that answers my question from the Klapisch thread.

CP,

Did you see the play? I don't understand what happened from the description? I can't picture a player watching a ball go by and not trying to get it and Cano's explanation isn't very helpful either.

Should go easy on Cano. Not every player can be a tool shed like Dustin Pedroia.

Too bad the ball wasn't hit by B.J. Upton. It'd be like a staring contest.

Giambi dives to his right on a ball that should have been caught...as Cano is ranging to his left to make a play on the ball. Ball skips off Giambi's glove and bounces into shallow RF BEHIND CANO...Cano makes half hearted turn to ball, stops and stares at the ball rolling into the OF. He then half-asses his way to retrieve it, but by this time Abreu has a beat on it...and Floyd is safe at second.

A woofer all around.

If only there were a leader and True Yankee on the field -- preferably close to Cano -- who could inspire Cano to greater heights through the power of divine will.

Working hard for that 4th place finish...yeah!

Giambi dives to his right on a ball that should have been caught

Does this even require a funny comment?

Where's "Past a diving Jeter" when you need him?

That's awesome.
For bonus points, figure out a way to blame this on A-Rod.

A-Rod DHed, which is the definition of lack of hustle on fielding plays.

Any time Abreu beats you to a ball, you know you need to try harder...

Cano is certainly reacting the right way to this though, unlike the aforementioned Mr. Upton. I feel very sorry for Joe Girardi everything has gone wrong for him.

It was actually Nady. Abreu had the day off.

That sounds rather sarcastic, to me.

wouldn't have happened if Larry Bowa were still there

Yep, Bowa would have fielded the ball and thrown Davey Lopes out at first. (Stated in case there are any Phillies Phans on this thread.)

Hilarious mental picture--kudos.

The Yanks were dead before the ship even sank. And now that it's sunk, expect more of this the last two weeks of the year.
