MLB: Carlos Gomez pulls off rare Twins cycle

Or as Joe Benigno sorta said..."Bah...don’t listen to garbage like Baseball America. I guarantee Angel Pagan will be a better player than Carlos Gomez!”

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire has said numerous times this season to never take your eyes off Carlos Gomez when he’s at the plate, because you never know what the 22-year-old center fielder might do.

What he did on Wednesday night was accomplish a feat that a Twins hitter hadn’t reached in nearly 22 years.

Gomez became the first Twin to hit for the cycle since Kirby Puckett did it on Aug. 1, 1986, against Oakland, and the eighth in team history to do so.

“It’s amazing, something that Kirby Puckett did,” Gomez said. “Gold Glover, All-Star. I can’t explain it to you. That’s unbelievable.”

Gomez has a chance to be a special player. I really didn't want to lose him in that trade. Part of me will still dreaming up scenarios where the Twins would be willing to trade him back to the Mets after this year due to impatience.

With a night like last night, I may as well accept the fact that he'll be the Twins CFer for the next 5+ years.

Gomez really is a joy to watch play. he makes every at bat exciting despite his inability to take a walk and his propensity to K.

Just making sure the cycle-no-hitter spread remains constant.

I have never seen a player like Gomez before. He has a unique ability to do something mindbogglingly stupid at the one hand and unbelievably amazing on the other - in the same inning. Boy, he is a lot of fun to watch and his energy is absolutely infectious.

I assure you I mean this in the most light hearted way possible, but what exactly did you want to lose in the process of trading for the best pitcher in baseball?

Agreed, he looks like all wired-up energy up there.

Is he still going down 0-2 every AB?

Carlos Gomez- destined to be vastly overrated by the MSM and general fanbase.

EDIT: he's probably a lot better with the glove than I give him credit for. Maybe "overrated offensively" is a better hedge.

If he's overrated like Suzuki, that would probably be fine with the Twins.

What the Twins fans are saying about Gomez reminds me very much of what was said about Reyes circa. 2005.

Whether he would take the leap I have no idea. I certainly hope he would though.

How is his defense right now? He seemed to misjudge every other flyball in Shea. His speed obviously more than covered most of those mistakes.

I would have done the trade, of course, just that I think very highly of Gomez. For instance, if we hadn't done the Milledge trade, I would have dealt Milledge and kept Gomez.

That's funny Will, I think he reminds me of that one good year Cristian Guzman had. Hopefully he becomes less stupid and keeps up the amazing, unlike Guzman.

"How is his defense right now?"

According to THT, "...he has a .973 Revised Zone Rating? The major league average for center fielders is .915."

Not much to dislike there.

I'm with Lastings though. He just looks really, really bad running down fly-balls; I can't believe his rating is that high.

I'm still waiting for somebody to hit the homer cycle - solo shot, two-run, three-run and grand slam.
