MLB: Cecil Cooper seeks consistency out of ‘O’

On the other hand, Houston’s 81 walks are the fewest in the league, and the team on-base percentage of .306 ranks 29th in baseball, ahead of only San Diego (.302).

“I’ll just put it this way, and it’s what I’ve always said, and it’s that I’d just like to see a little consistency,” manager Cecil Cooper said. “Not complaining that it hasn’t been good. We’ve been productive, we’re scoring runs, but consistency like [Saturday] night when we get five and pretty much shut it down after that, and that’s what I’m talking about. We’ve got good hitters in our lineup. We didn’t really put them away when we could have.”

Cooper isn’t concerned about the low walks totals and on-base percentage. This is a team that swings the bats; as long as they aren’t striking out too often, the Astros can live with fewer walks.

“That’s not my concern as much as continuing to fight and not have three-pitch at-bats, two-pitch at-bats, unless you’re getting something good to hit,” Cooper said.

Thanks to Turk Lown Gunman.

What do you expect from a guy that doesn't understand bunting?

Easy, just face Eric Gagne all the time. For ####'s sake.

At least Joe Morgan will approve.

Is Cecil slow? This is the guy who complained about giving up a home run to the Diamondback's best hitter.

Astros manager Cecil Cooper called it "by far, by far" the worst loss of the season.

"I mean, we can't even get the stinkin' pitcher out, we're in trouble,"

In "The Story of O," O was submissive all the time she was at the chateau. The Astros' O is showing a similar consistency whenever it is at a ballpark.

Cecil Cooper's O-face has not been a pleasant sight for the past month.

As an Astros fan, I don't know quite what to say. Cooper is correct about the consistency issue...but is it possible that the inconsistency arises because the OBP is inadequate? That seems apparent to me. More consistent production arises from OBP, instead of just depending on slugging. I can't disagree with Cooper's statement that he wants batters to go deeper into their plate appearances. But surely Cooper realizes that is likely to lead to more walks. I can hope that maybe the Astros will luck into more walks if he gives his advice to the hitters.

Teams with more of their production tied up in OBP (what Bill James called long-sequence offense) actually tend to be less consistent than teams with roughly equivalent production but with more of it tied up in SLG (short-sequence offense). Long-sequence offenses usually have more low-scoring games AND more high-scoring games than equivalent short-sequence offenses.
