MLB: Dealing Halladay could fit in with GM Anthopoulos’ vision

A contract extension for Halladay is an unlikely scenario, considering that 2010 likely will be a stepping stone within a more long-term process for Toronto. It is more likely Anthopoulos will field trade offers for the pitcher this winter, and the young general manager indicated he is open to listening to proposals for any of his players.

“There are several players that I would be very reluctant to trade,” Anthopoulos said. “That being said, I think I have to be open-minded to anything that can make this ballclub better going forward and better for the long-term. ... Roy’s made it very clear that he wants to win, and we respect that and that’s why we love him. He’s as competitive as there is.

“He’s probably one of the greatest, if not the greatest, Blue Jay to ever put on a uniform here. But he wants to win, and ... we were a 75-win team last year. We haven’t met his criteria for winning, and we certainly don’t fault him for that. We certainly want to win as well, and I think he stressed that his timeline for winning and ours may not mesh and may not match.”

Thanks to Tutt.

They dumped Rios, they're talking about trading for an injured catcher, they're under orders to cut salary, and they're fielding offers for Halladay.

This offseason is going to suck.

I don't know the Jays' history that well, but is this true? It could very well be. Obviously there have greats who have spent a little time here and there in a Jays uniform, but Halladay's been there a while.

In terms of pitching, the list is probably Stieb (~2900 IP at 122 ERA+), then Halladay (~2050 IP at 134 ERA+), although Halladay is closing the gap rapidly.

For offense, it's Delgado (~6000 PA at 142 OPS+).

I just don't see how they get a deal done that makes sense. The Halladay extension is going to be huge. How can you give up a reasonable talent package and a 5 yr/120M extension?

The Yankees don't appear to have the budget to add those kind of numbers in the rotation, with the need to fill LF/DH. The Red Sox probably don't have the minor league talent to get the deal done. And that's even before we get to Toronto's reluctance to trade in division.

Maybe the Angels go for Doc as an alternative to resigning Lackey?

I like the idea of getting Snyder.

Possibly...or that other LA team might view him as the missing link to get over that red-pinstriped hump.

I thought of them, but figured the McCourt divorce probably precludes any big move.

I don't mind Chris Snyder. I just don't like the idea of signing on for $10.5M over the next two years (plus buyout) for a catcher coming off a lost season and back surgery. If he were cheaper, or if Arizona were throwing in cash (which won't happen), I'd be happy with the deal.

I think acquiring Kazmir effectively cuts that option off. Resigning Lackey only costs the Angels money, but Halladay will cost them prospects as well, and they already sent a bushel of prospects for Kaz. Halladay's also going into his free agent season, so he'd probably fetch more in July than over the winter.

And I just have to broadcast this to the world: I'm up $1105 at the poker tables. I rule!

Yes but Halladay's better and Lackey's coming off an injury. You really wouldn't trade Joe Saunders, Brandon Wood and Hang Conger for Halladay, and then sign him long term, rather than keeping those guys and signing Lackey long term?

I'd miss Halladay. If the Jays end up hanging on to him until the end of the year, attempting to resign him and probably failing, and getting draft picks instead, I'd be okay with that.

The list of greatest-Blue-Jays-ever should also include Alomar, but probably not Clemens; two great seasons is still just two seasons.

Halladay is great, but he's not worth extrajudicial execution of prospects.

No, I really wouldn't. Lackey'll be both good (not Halladay good, but good) and cheaper long term. Saunders is a very solid #3-#4 starter, and both Wood and Conger could turn out to be very good.
