MLB: Enberg hired as Padres TV voice

Oh my my, It’s guaranteed to keep you alive!

“Oh my!” The Padres have landed a legend for their television broadcast team—Dick Enberg, who is considered not only one of the most versatile broadcasters in sports, but also one of the most recognized.

A source with knowledge of the situation said Wednesday that an official announcement will come Thursday and a press conference will be held at PETCO Park.

It’s believed that Enberg, who currently works for CBS Sports, will call about 120 games next season as part of the Padres television team.

Enberg, who will turn 75 on Jan. 9, lives in nearby La Jolla.

Huh. This is kinda neat. I have a feeling the majority of people here will be against this, but I like Enberg. This will increase my Padres MLB.TV viewing at the beginning of the season. I hope he's adequate; as in, just get the names right most of the time.

He seems like a nice enough fellow. He's just guaranteed to make 5 or so mistakes a broadcast.

My impression as well, although he's plenty sharper than Dick Stockton despite being eight years his senior.

I have the NFL Sunday Ticket and often I stop at the games he is calling because I still think he still is a great play by play man. Unlike the last few years of Pat Summerall's career, I haven't heard any decline in Enberg.

Does this mean Neely is out and Enberg will be paired with Mark Grant, or are both Marks gone and Enberg's going to go Vin Scully-style... Either way, I'm happy about this news. Padres games have been really, really hard to watch/listen to the last few years; looking forward to an improvement.

I think Enberg is still plenty good. We need to enjoy these classic voices while they're still around. Dick Enberg, even running at 2/3 speed, beats the pants off most of his peers.

Enberg is still great doing NFL games, so I'm pretty happy about this.

It seems unlikely that Grant will be the same goofball as he's been the last few years if partnered with Enberg. Which is something I'll miss.

I take it as a tacit admission that journalists sometimes run with stories from sources talking out their rectums.

My fave Enberg call was at Wimbledon many years ago, during a mixed doubles match, when all four players slipped and fell during a volley: "he's down, she's down, THREE down, FOUR DOWN...!"

Fun fact: Dick Enberg was born almost excatly three decades before RMc, about 100 miles away.

Funny, I thought it was about Morgan Ensberg when I first clicked on this. Ensberg got a bit of experience as a television broadcaster on some college baseball games last year.
