MLB: Fiery Furnaces heat up for the White Sox

Holy Cow Language School!

The Brooklyn-based brother-and-sister rock act known as the Fiery Furnaces is known for multi-layered, highly conceptualized, deeply personal and complex music and whirlwind live shows that border on insanity.

...Matthew and Eleanor Friedberger grew up outside of Chicago and have pleasant memories of their early days as die-hard White Sox fans. Matthew even credits a White Sox employee for musical inspiration, believe it or not.

Matthew also mentioned that he cried when the South Siders finally won a World Series in 2005, and he has no love for the Cubs.

“I grew up with a lot of Cubs fans,” Matthew said. “I don’t really want to wish them bad, but I hate the Cubs. They get what they deserve, in my opinion, and they deserve to lose.”

Never heard them before, but after this quote, I'll give them a shot.

I grew up with these cats. Good people. Blueberry Boat is my favorite record by them, but Gallowsbird's Bark is good as well. Too bad about the Sox thing...

They're OK, I like them though they are a bit on the pretentious side musically. Then again, who isn't nowadays (well, except for the Detroit Cobras, of course).

I've never heard them, but I already like them more than Styx.

They have a great cover of Norwegian Wood on the indified Rubber Soul from a few years ago.

All of their albums are pretty erratic but there's good stuff on each one. The most straightforward is probably the EP album, and Blueberry Boat is occasionally outstanding as well. I wouldn't have pegged them as baseball fans, honestly- this makes me like them a bit more.

Is there a rivalry like this between the Yanx and Mets? The Giants and A's? The Dodgers and the Angels?

Cubs - Sox - 108 years

Yanks - Mets - 46 years

Dodgers - Angels - 47 years

Giants - A's - 40 years.

Yankees- Dodgers- Giants- 55 years

Most of those aren't really comparable. The analogy is San Fran/Oakland. White Sox/Cubs is as much class warfare as anythinng else.

I didn't realize MLB had batting cages set up at Bonnaroo. Pretty cool.

I guess I'd be in the minority in really liking Bitter Tea.

There are plenty of others of us that will get you while you're dodging one.

I saw their live show once, and downloaded Bitter Tea. I consider myself pretty open-minded musically, but they are just too all over the place for my tastes. It seems like every time they find a groove they outsmart themselves and completely lose me in the process...it's a very schizophrenic sound...but to each his own I suppose.

I like Blueberry Boat when I feel like escaping to another planet - The EP collection is a good start .

I love "Single Again" - straight forward and to the point

I agree that their music is very hit and miss, but when I saw them live it was amazing. There aren't many other bands will remix their catalog into a single, continuous hour-long opus complete with movements and reprises.

Even if someone only marginally like their albums, I still think that they should make an effort to see them live.

"Benton Harbor Blues (Reprise)", the short version at the end of the album, is by far my favorite of their songs.

I'm a big fan of indie/experimental rock musics but Blueberry Boat was just outrageously annoying in a seemingly totally purposeful manner. I guess it does take some talent to raise being annoying into a fine art form but I can't see why that would be anyone's goal.

Weeds out the uncommitted.
