MLB: Granderson shelved by broken finger, will miss at least two weeks

As Roto-bud, The Bernal Factor, just told me..."That’s why they put erasers on the end of my ####!”

What was hoped to be a simple bruise to Curtis Granderson’s hand has turned out to be a stint on the disabled list. The Tigers will place their star center fielder and leadoff hitter on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 23, with a non-displaced fracture of the metacarpal at the base of his right middle finger.

The injury occurred in the fourth and final inning of Saturday’s rained-out game against the Phillies. Granderson was leading off the inning when a fastball from left-hander Travis Blackley ran inside and struck him in the hand. Granderson took his place at first base and remained in the game before heavy rain halted the contest two batters later.

“I was hoping [Granderson] was OK,” president/general manager Dave Dombrowski said Sunday morning, “but I also saw that he was shaking his hand.”

Now Inge can stop complaining.

That sounds kind of similar to the finger injury Coco Crisp had to start '06...

The one from which he never really recovered.

I thought Crisp broke his finger sliding into third, a la Manny?

If that's so, it's a different type of fracture.

Wow, my second round fantasy pick came down to Granderson or Sizemore. I went with Sizemore. This is making me look like a genius now.

You were saved from yourself, Moose. :)

Shortstop Edgar Renteria batted leadoff on Sunday. Leyland has used catcher Ivan Rodriguez in the leadoff spot for games against left-handed starting pitchers this spring, and he has said he would consider doing so against lefties once the regular season began.

I thought the Marlins already proved that Renteria isn't really a leadoff batter. Pudge leadoff sounds a little too Jason-Giambi-as-a-leadoff-man to me.

Why don't the Phils take their revenge on a National instead?

Pudge leadoff sounds a little too Jason-Giambi-as-a-leadoff-man to me.

I think maybe you mean Jeremy Giambi, since he was the Giambi floated as a leadoff man back with the A's, but the argument remains the same. That is, how would Pudge as a leadoff man be like Giambi? Not that he ever took many walks, but Rodriguez has taken it to new heights in recent years. Giambi would at least get on base in order to clog them.

Pudge leadoff is pretty incomparable in recent history I would think.

Does this mean the Tigers won't score 1,000 runs...?

dude. at least the Giambis had a great OBP. Pudge walked in the SINGLE DIGITS last year.

he's the worest lead off player imaginable. makes a ton of outs AND no speed on the bases. if the Tigers really carry through with this hilarious plan it's going to be a loooooong and dissapointing summer in Mo-Town.

the Tiger's offense probably looked better on paper then in reality to begin with. this makes it even more ugly.

The right middle finger.

Of all the luck. That will make it really tough for him to flip the bird to the fans when he gets booed after the Tigers bring him back prematurely and he stinks up the joint.

The Ivan Rodriguez as leadoff vs. lefties is nothing new. Leyland did the same thing last spring and even a couple times during the season. I wouldn't be too worried that he'll see a lot of PA as a leadoff guy. Even if he does, he has hit very well against lefties (aside from not getting even one BB from a lefthander in 2007).

And wouldn't think Giambi as leadoff is a good comparison. Pudge runs well and is aggressive on the basepaths.

Besides you wouldn't want to clog up the bases with all those walks.
