MLB: Kershaw could be called up to bigs

Hot Diggity!

Dodgers phenom left-hander Clayton Kershaw had the kind of start for Double-A Jacksonville on Thursday night that will only fuel speculation he’s about to become a Major Leaguer.

Kershaw faced three Carolina Mudcats, struck out two, then was yanked by manager John Shoemaker, completely healthy. By starting Thursday night, Kershaw is on schedule to start again Tuesday, which happens to be the next time the Dodgers need a fifth starter in Chicago.

But it could be sooner than that. By throwing only one inning and a pregame warmup (the equivalent of a bullpen session), Kershaw could be slipped into the Dodgers rotation as early as Saturday night, when Brad Penny is scheduled to start. That would buy an extra day or more for Penny, who has scuffled through his past four starts while pitching through shoulder stiffness.

I'm pretty sure they knew this was coming before the game started. Rick Asadoorian started warming up while Kershaw was facing his second hitter.

I was more impressed by Kershaw this time than the time I saw him last year. He blew John Raynor away with a 97 MPH heater upstairs and threw two absolutely sick breaking balls to Chris Coghlan that Coghlan couldn't hold up on (both wound up well off the plate). Cameron Maybin did get his bat on one, grounding out to first.

Public Enemy Number 1!

Asadoorian, by the way, pitched five shutout innings, allowing one hit and no runs, and hit an opposite-field HR to boot. He's probably not going to make it as a pitcher, IMO, but he certainly had everything working last night.

I could get used to hearing Vinny call that out!

Great. Exactly what the Dodgers need. ####

He was a good defensive outfielder way back, but just couldn't hit.

There's a chance that Schmidt will be ready to come off of the dl in 3-4 weeks. If he does, then unless Kershaw is dominating he would probably be sent down, so that the Dodgers would be better able to control his innings. Then he'd be brought back at the end of August for the stretch run.

How will Kershaw do? Nobody Knows, that's The Riddle. Wouldn't It Be Good if he pitches well?

And thus endeth the '80s English synth-pop reference' portion of my day.

It's official. To make room on the 40 man roster, Loaiza was activated from the dl and then released; to make room on the 25 man roster Brazoban was sent down to Vegas. He makes his major league debut tomorrow against the Cardinals.

I'm sure that Kershaw won't let the sun go down on himself...

Made his debut today - struggled a little in the first - trying to strike out everybody - gave up a walk and a double (to Pujols, after getting two strikes on him) and struck out the side. Ended up tiring in the sixth and giving up the tying run, though he still was throwing 95 or so to the final batter. Six innings, two runs, 7 ks, one walk, in an eventual Dodger win.

I'll take it.

I'm quite shocked Torre let him throw 101 pitches.

Well, he threw 30 pitches in the first inning, and then basically sailed through the lineup for the next four innings - and even struck out the first batter in the sixth. There was zero evidence that he was tiring until the second batter in the inning, and not much even then.

But yeah, I'd like it more if the Dodgers had a day off after the Cubs series, so that Kershaw would get an extra day of rest, before pitching again against the Mets.

Game Score, if you're into that sort of thing, of 60.
Welcome to The Show, young man, welcome.

I always wondered with happened to him. Thanks, Mike.
