MLB: Marlins close to deal with Cantu

Holy Gratacaps!  Bring in Jorge Cantu for helmet fittings!

Shortly after the Marlins traded Miguel Cabrera to the Tigers last month at the Winter Meetings, Jorge Cantu was a name high on Florida’s list to be a possible replacement at third base.

The Marlins now are moving closer to signing Cantu as a free-agent candidate to compete for the starting job.

“Things have been moving along pretty well,” agent Steve Canter, who represents Cantu, said on Thursday morning. “There is a strong possibility that things are going to work out over there.”

I like Jorge Cantu. Best of luck.

Its not easy to find a worse fielding 3B to replace Cabrera, but it looks like the Marlins did a great job in finding one.

Wow, they found a worse defensive third baseman. That's remarkable.

Edit: DAMNIT AROM! You've won this round...

That'll shore up the infield defense.

Edit: ...and I finished a distant third.

He's actually, IMO, the worst fielder in baseball, at any position he plays. He's terrible at short and second as well.

I would think the Fish would consider adding a good SS and move Hanley. HanRam should probably play 3B.

Can too! Cantu!

I like Jorge Cantu.

I liked him better when he played in the NL Central.

I think the Fish should get a real SS and 2b move Uggla to 3b and Hanley to CF

What was Hanley Ramirez's defensive reputation in the minor leagues?

They might have actually found two, especially if Cabrera's in better shape next year. Jose Castillo's no star with the leather, either.

My hat's off to the Marlins. They may have actually found a worse player than Aaron Boone.

Hmm, only $500K for Cantu, plus incentives. As of now Jose Castillo is still the highest paid player on the 2008 Marlins.

At least it's not Mike Hampton anymore.
