MLB: Mulder sidelined by rotator cuff strain

Holy escalating death-fetishist!

Currently in the Minor Leagues on a rehab assignment, Mark Mulder was diagnosed with a mild rotator cuff strain of his left shoulder on Wednesday morning. The Cardinals left-hander had been scheduled to pitch again Saturday against Triple-A Tucson, but he is now set to rest for the next week to 10 days before a re-evaluation.

After experiencing shoulder fatigue following his rehab start in Triple-A Memphis on Monday, Mulder returned to St. Louis for a follow-up visit with team physician Dr. George Paletta, who performed shoulder surgery on Mulder in both September of 2006 and 2007.

“I think it’s just Mother Nature saying slow down some,” manager Tony La Russa said Wednesday. “He should get all [the time] that he needs. We don’t need him to get here. We need him to get here and pitch like he can. He should get all the time he needs to make that.”

I hope LaRussa wasn't at the wheel after this interview.

“I think it’s just Mother Nature saying maybe you consider golf"

NOTE: Repoz's reference was to the Season Two (2x13) episode "Irresistible," which for the first time in X-Files history featured a non-supernatural antagonist who was in fact a necrophiliac. However, the Fox Network would not let 10-13 Productions use the word "necrophiliac" on TV, so Chris Carter decided to use "escalating death fetishist" instead.

he should have stopped right there.

Cardinals paid him 7.25 million for 06, 5 million last year, 6.5 this year. Almost 19 million for worse than replacement level pitching. They have an option for 11 million next year. Cardinals seem unwilling to cut bait and just admit they got taken big time on the trade.

I think you're more likely to see that now that Jocketty is no longer at the helm.

I think we're already seeing that by the sheer fact that he hasn't been brought up yet. Last year he was pitching in the big leagues when it was obvious he should have still been rehabbing. This latest injury gives the Cardinals that extra level of support they need for the upcoming decision to keep him rehabbing or cut him. I feel bad for the guy, but LaRussa's right: they don't need him right now.

Levi, where the hell've you been this season?

Travel and work have been conspiring against me. First time in sixteen years I've gone 0-for-April. But I'm starting my season Saturday, so here's hoping for some reasonable weather.
