MLB: Rangers hire Nolan Ryan as club president

From Risenhoover to risenfastball…

The Rangers are hiring Nolan Ryan as their new club president, team officials confirmed on Wednesday.

Ryan is expected to be introduced at a 3 p.m. CT press conference at The Ballpark in Arlington. Ryan has spent the past four years as a special assistant with the Houston Astros.

Ryan pitched with the Rangers from 1989-93 at the end of his 27-year Major League career. He finished with 324 career victories while setting Major League records with 5,714 strikeouts and seven no-hitters. He pitched two of those no-hitters with the Rangers.

Anyone want to lay odds on the likelihood that Jon Daniels will win any intra-office dispute going forward? I mean, how do you shoot Nolan Ryan in the back in Texas? What if you miss?

Yeah, that was my initial reaction, too: That's the end of the line for Jon Daniels.

I'm picturing Nolan Ryan putting Jon Daniels in a headlock much like he did to Robin Ventura.

I'm not sure Jon Daniels winning intra-office disputes is a good thing. If Nolan Ryan is able to prevent him from trading Ian Kinsler and Josh Hamilton for a box of raisins and an adorable puppy, this hiring will be a success.

Although upon further reflection, I'd rather have the puppy than Adam Eaton.

Has Ryan ever said much of anything that would indicate his thoughts on how teams are built, players developed, etc? Does anyone have any idea what sort of organization he'd envision? I don't really think his Round Rock experience is telling and I can't recall ever hearing him say anything not related to pitching or pain relief.

I am not sure how important the office of President is at the Ballpark, especially in terms of the ever-popular "baseball operations." (A phrase that always cracks me up – I mean, I know that baseball franchises comprise more than just their on-field side, but what the heck else is a baseball club for except "baseball operations"?)

The last president of the Rangers was apparently someone named Jeff Cogen, but if I ever heard of the guy I forgot about it. Was Rusty Rose president of the Rangers back in the Bush days? Was Bush himself? I do not remember. The GMs, and Mr Hicks after his purchase of the club, have run the baseball side, or so it seems from the outside.

I think Ryan is probably an expert on pitcher training and development, and I seem to recall him being characterized as a very good instructor.

Yeah, but you'll have to forgive me for holding Nolan Ryan guilty until proven innocent when it comes to taking abusing pitchers beyond even the lofty heights Dusty Baker has achieved.

I hope he can get us out of Iraq.

This strikes me as nothing more than a way for Tom Hicks to generate some positive PR for the franchise in a way that doesn't involve actually spending money on player payroll.

Although it's probably a good thing if it gives Daniels an adult to talk to before making any more trades.

Ryan will do what George Bush did for the Rangers which is smile for the camera and get quoted.

Who would win a fight between Nolan Ryan and Chuck Norris? Who would Texas root for?

Jon Daniels messed up badly with 1 or 2 trades, but has since then had a good string of moves, brining in good young talent into the organization. I'd say he's trending in the right direction.

chuck norris is so fast he can run around the the world and hit himself in the back of the head.

Is there a conflict of interest between being President of the Rangers and part-owner of an Astro affiliate? By Astro I mean the baseball team not the Jetsons' dog.

Yeah, that was my initial reaction, too: That's the end of the line for Jon Daniels.

Jamey Newberg wrote earlier today, but after the Ryan announcement:

According to multiple reports, Tom Hicks will give GM Jon Daniels his second
contract extension in less than a year, for an undisclosed length of time --
though it will reportedly match the duration of Nolan Ryan's deal with the club,
which was also undisclosed.
