MLB: Strained groin forces Halladay onto DL

Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay will be placed on the 15-day disabled list on Thursday, adding another arm to the club’s list of walking wounded. Halladay threw a bullpen session on Wednesday at Citizens Bank Park, but still experienced discomfort in his strained right groin.

“I feel a lot better,” Halladay said. “It’s just that I feel a little bit of tightness.”

Halladay, 10-1 with a 2.51 ERA, exited his start on Friday after throwing just two pitches in the fourth inning against the Marlins. The right-hander will be eligible to be activated from the DL by June 28, and he hopes to be ready by then.

“Absolutely,” Halladay said of being ready at that time.

Toronto will need a replacement starter for Saturday’s game against the Washington Nationals. A possible candidate is left-hander Brett Cecil, whose next scheduled turn with Triple-A Las Vegas falls on that day.

Thanks to From Hearron!.

Blue Jays pitchers now on the disabled list:

Roy Halladay
Dustin McGowan
Shaun Marcum
Jesse Litsch
Casey Janssen
Bobby Ray
Scott Downs

I'd take that staff over any other team's disabled list.

Boo to this.

Apropos of nothing, Yahoo says the all-star game this year will be Tampa Bay or Boston vs. the National League.

Yahoo's scoreboard is prone to some wacky errors, but seriously, the hell?

They probably typed "American" but still have code somewhere (from during the 2008 ALCS) that automatically changes "American" to "Tampa Bay or Boston"

I hope Halladay gets sentenced to life in prison for forcing himself on the DL.

So, the Jays are now have a rotation that includes their 10th best option. Splendid. And their bullpen is missing their top three left-handed pitchers. Excellent.

What's the word for an emotion worse than despair? I think I'm ready for some detachment, so I might as well reflect on my favourite baseball quote:

When we were growing up the Cleveland Indians were a perennially dreadful, snakebiten baseball team. The only way to deal with it was to sit in the bleachers, the cheap seats, as far away from the action as it was possible to be in the old Cleveland Stadium. (An 80,000 seater with barely 5000 fans in attendance is a unique experience.) From that POV the passion of the game was a distant horizon. Detached, we watched opposition homers float in slow motion across a summer sky. 3-0. 5-0. 7-0. It was OK. It was just a dream. It was happening Somewhere Else to Other People.

Luckily I've still got my Starpass, so getting seats far away from the action is easily done.

Is that official? All I've heard so far is that an x-ray and an MRI were negative.

Yeah, Downs to the DL with a sprained big left toe is on the Jays front page right now.

Brilliant. I now have 4 more DL'ed players (including both Downs & Halladay) than I do DL slots on my fantasy team. (The stupid league allows only 2.)

Matt Halladay on DL means that Toronto can start counting the days until Hockey starts.

Why in the world would anyone in Toronto get consolation by following hockey?

Two reasons:

1) Despite Toronto sucking wind for the past 5 years, Toronto vs Montreal games are STILL exciting.
2) It's fun to watch the Ottawa Senators fans gnash their teeth and rend their jerseys when a much inferior Toronto squad beats their team (4 out of 6 last year). It's also fun to remind them that Toronto has won just as many playoff games in the past two seasons as Ottawa.

As for Doc Halladay going on the DL, this is the final nail in the coffin for the Jays and probably Riccardi.

Are you kidding? This is the perfect out for JP. After all, how can you expect him to win the division without his best starter? And look at how well the Jays did to hang in there and keep things competitive, even with all those injuries to the starting staff. Doesn't that show what a great eye JP has for pitching? After all, they lost the equivalent of a full starting rotation to the DL, and they could still keep most games close and interesting.

Hands up, everyone who ever thought the Blue Jays rotation would look like this:

Ricky Romero
Scott Richmond
Brian Tallet
Brett Cecil
Brad Mills

With Jason Frasor as the closer!

Brad Mills

Who is this guy? I've never heard of him.

EDIT: Also, Richmond threw a hell of a game tonight.

There are a lot of ex-pats here who cheer for someone other than the Leafs. For us (although it's been a brutal few years for Oilers fans), there's something to console ourselves with.

Isn't Brad Mills the young detective in Se7en?

Matt Halladay? Is he a hockey player?
