MLB: Street likely to start season on DL

Yeah, what James Carr sang…

Rockies closer Huston Street is set for an MRI on his ailing right shoulder later Wednesday morning after suffering a setback while playing catch on Tuesday.

Street said he doesn’t believe the problem is serious; nonetheless, the development most likely will delay his throwing enough that it’ll force him to the disabled list when the season opens April 5.

“It’s just a little bump in the road,” Street said. “We don’t think it’s a major thing. We’re pushing the envelope with our bodies, and sometimes you have little flare-ups.”

Tightness in the shoulder flared after his first live batting practice session of the spring. Street, who converted 35 of 37 save opportunities last season, stopped throwing briefly to treat the problem. He progressed to the point of facing teammates in a 25-pitch simulated game on Monday.

But when Street backed off on playing catch Tuesday and reported the problem to head athletic trainer Keith Dugger, the Rockies called for the MRI.

“It was similar tightness to before, stuff that we didn’t want to try to pitch through,” Street said. “We came in today, and the general idea was let’s get a picture that will give us an idea of how aggressive we can or can’t be with it. That’s really all I know at this point.

This is not good, of course, but I think the Rockies have a really good team and have as good a shot as LA or Philadelphia at the NL pennant. Colorado is well-balanced and has a lot of guys in their primes. I think I'd pick them to make the Series.

You like De La Rosa that much? He's likely the 2nd best starter they have.

It's not one guy; it's the balance of the roster and its age that I like.

I concur with robinred. It's a heck of a team. And De La Rosa is a very good #2 who is entering the prime of his career.

De La Rosa was part of the Schilling-to-Boston trade! I honestly had no idea.

I'd say Aaron Cook is really their #2. Actually, their rotation is so balanced, I can see any of their non-Jimenez pitchers become the #2 - de la Rosa, Cook, Hammel, Francis, possibly even Jhouly Chacin too.

I think this won't affect the Rox in the 9th that bad as I think Corpas can become a decent closer, but its who replace Corpas in the middle innings that could hurt them. Betancourt is hurt too, isn't he? Maybe the Indians can find someone to take Kerry Wood's contract after all.

Franklin Morales.

Yeah, Morales filled in last year when Street was out. He did a decent job, then gave up a GS against Edgar Renteria close to the time when Street would return. Morales remained shaky after that, esp. with his control. He failed so often that Tracy was reluctant to use him in a tight spot. My guess is Daley and possibly Rincon would move up a slot in middle relief. Perhaps Belisle, too, if he has a good spring.

I don't know that I'd pick them to go to the series, but they remain a fairly balanced team. A lot went right last year (such as Tulo's breakout and the team's health). Some of that could be youth, but I could see some regression, too. However, what will they be regressing from...the overall 92 win season or just the .638 ball under Tracy?

Morales has been terrible so far this spring, hasn't he? I'm not counting on much from him this year. He seems like the kind of guy who finally figures out how to pitch when he's 29 and with his fourth organization.

Well, he was "THE Mexican John Rocker". Those don't grow on trees.

In all fairness, de la Rosa bounced around a lot before he figured his #### out in Colorado.
