MLB: Sweeney hopes to play one more year

Sweeney, released by the Oakland A’s late last season, wants to sign with another club in time for 2009 Spring Training.

“My dad always taught me growing up that you should never look back and have regrets. I want baseball to shut the door on me while I’m kicking and screaming,” he said. “My plan is to play this year. I don’t want to look back 10 years from now and look back and say, ‘Gosh, I wish I would’ve have given it another shot rather than just hang ‘em up.’ “

After 13 years with Kansas City, Sweeney signed a Minor League contract last winter with the A’s and made the roster. Because of knee problems, he played in just 42 games as a first baseman, designated hitter and pinch-hitter with a .286 average, two homers and 12 RBIs.

He won’t be returning to the Royals. “No, we haven’t spoken with the Royals,” Sweeney said. “They’re not one of the teams that have shown interest to my agent.”

..."Even though I’m one or two hits away from being a career .300 hitter and one home run shy of 200, the numbers should never identify a person,” he said. “If I wind up that way, that’s great, because that’s everything I had. If my career ends tomorrow, I’ll never have a regret.”

.299 and 199? I’d be Monk-###### the rest of my life!

He might get #200, but he won't get back to .300.

He certainly looks cooked, and he had two years after 2006 to show that the 2006 decline wasn't real.

It was.

If I were him I'd start working out at catcher again...

He can't even stay healthy at DH. We're talking about a guy who gets hurt while already on the DL. I doubt he could even put on the catchers gear anymore without spraining something.

Wonder if Mike Sweeney wants to be a professional pinch-hitter for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

He could pull a John Kruk, have a hot streak and get his average up to .300, drive off into the sunset, and then be really annoying on TV.

He could change his name to Mutt and take his act with Jeff Weaver on the road. It's not like either has a future in baseball.

Yeah, it's so unreasonable for him to want to play baseball again. The nerve of the guy!

He just had a 99 OPS+ last season. He's hit both righties and lefties well. If he doesn't mind filling a PH/backup 1B role, what's wrong with that?

I'd give him a deal if he'd promise to stomp Jeff Weaver again, just for old time's sake.

Sigh...
In high school I could dunk a volleyball, a women's ball... I could dunk a ball that was just a bit flat on that bent rim in the lower gym that wasn't quite regulation anymore... but I could never quite do it for real.

Now that I'm 40, I'm just about as strong as I was then... I have not(shockingly) lost any of my foot speed... but on a good day I can maybe touch the rim...

Thanks for touching a nerve.

Sounds mostly like my situation at age 38. I always tried to dunk in high school and could dunk a volleyball, but usually came up just short. The summer after graduation was my best on the basketball court, I finally could get up there, dunk with 2 hands, dunk backwards, though nothing really creative. I kept it up most of the way through college, but once I was out of college I didn't get on the basketball court very often, and what you don't use you lose. With a good effort I can still get the tips of my fingers on the rim.

I was horribly fat and out of shape for much of my late 20's and early 30's... I've been exercising regularly now for about six years and have regained just about everything... except the ability to jump.
I vaguely remember reading some short article (in SI?) about aging athletes... mostly NBA players... that said that jumping ability the earliest and most consistent loss with age... even for real professionals who avoided injury and maintained serious training regimens...

:(

A few years ago I saw Dominique Wilkins dunk during a halftime show at a Hawks game. He was able to do it, but it was closer than I would have thought.

And that's Dominique Wilkins.
