MLB to ‘draft’ Negro Leaguers

I wonder if the Red Sox will draft Willie Mays....

Jimmie Lee Solomon sees professional baseball going more global each day, but as one of the game’s top executives, Solomon is mindful of the game’s past, which for nearly half of the 20th century did not include black ballplayers in the Major Leagues.

“You can’t really go and plot out your future if you don’t look around over your shoulder and see where you’ve come from,” said Solomon, executive vice president of Major League Baseball.

Solomon and others took a look at that past, and they decided the sport needed to find yet another way to remember those surviving Negro League players who had been excluded from the Majors.

As part of its 2008 First-Year Player Draft next month, Major League Baseball will hold a ceremonial selection of players from the Negro Leagues. Participation in the draft is voluntary, but most of the 30 clubs are expected to take part as baseball continues its efforts to keep alive the history of the Negro Leagues.

...Under the initiative, teams will “draft” surviving Negro League players, he said. The individuals selected will represent all the black ballplayers that were denied a chance to play in the Majors because of their skin color.

I hope the Angels go for a pitcher, since they don't have a first rounder this June. The player they get will be very old, but will probably still be able to strike out more batters than Jon Garland.

Utterly pointless.

This wouldn't have happened if baseball hadn't had a negro cap.

This is a transparent plot to screw them out of free agency money.

All that really matters with something like this is the reactions of the Negro Leaguers themselves. If they like it, I like it, and if they don't, I don't.

Hopefully, someone at MLB HQ checked with a few as a sounding board, before this went live.

This should be enough to win over the handful of Black Americans who felt the gigantic Jackie Robinson garbage bag featured at Shea Stadium on Jackie Robinson Night did not make up for excluding them from the game for so many years.

At worst, it's harmless, and it might introduce some to the history of the NLs, so why not? And some old guys will get a day in the sun before that big day in the sun comes calling. I don't see anything negative here.

Who's tonedeaf?

Not only is this meaningless, it seems slightly offensive. Patronizing, at least. EDIT - agree with #6

Will Seligula still demand that teams not pay over slot for the octogenarians? I hope the players hold out.

If this occured prior to 2005 the Yankees would pick Double Duty Radcliffe. Up until a couple years ago he had better range than Jeter.

You want to know why black kids don't play baseball anymore? Because this is how MLB tries to increase African-American interest in the sport.

None of these players played college ball so Oakland is not interested. There is nothing reliable about their past careers to project their future qualifications.

So all 35 people who follow the MLB draft will have a new appreciation for the Negro League players. Well done Bud.

So will there be a separate Negro Leaguers draft or will teams just spend 44th round picks on Cool Papa Bell kind of like they do now when they take their manager's son in the 42nd round?

When BASN complains about this, I think I might actually agree with them.

"Congratulations, Thomas "High Pockets" Turner, the era of racial strife is over because you now have a plaque stating, that if you weren't black, you could have been a Cincinnati Red and be just as exploited as the white players of the time. Now that MLB's hands are officially clean now, enjoy your coupon for Jiffy Pop!"

And wow, from the press release, MLB is even paying for their travel expenses! How very generous to make 90-year-old men not have to pay their own way to help market your company that wouldn't hire them because they were black.

On the other hand, I think when you have to resort to pointless contrived stupidity like this, it is in fact time for MLB to stop "finding yet another way" to call attention to how MLB crapped on them so many years ago.

Assuming this draft follows the team order of the actual MLB draft, and from the historical perspective, I don't like the idea of the Dodgers (#15th) drafting AFTER the Pirates (#2), Athletics (#12), Cardinals (#13) and the former Senators (#14) in the first round.

This is Bud Selig and MLB we're talking about here. This is just an move to keep them from signing free agent contracts and keep their salaries controlled for the next six years. Given where most of these guys are on the actuarial tables, how many of them do you think are going to live to see free agency? Just another move to bind the Black man for life without a chance of freedom.

MLB could have done more, but in talking to the former Negro Leaguers it is clear that they love the idea and this really means a lot to them. I will admit that I thought the whole thing was a ridiculous charade before, but there does seem to be some actual good being done here.
