MLB to open Online Newspaper

MLB Advanced Media will formally announce today that in May it will debut what’s meant to be a online baseball newspaper featuring columnists, including NBC/MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann.

MLBAM Chief Executive Bob Bowman says the idea is to create a brand and website that’s separate and largely independent from mlb.com.

Bowman says the as-yet unnamed site will try to offer “a newspaper look — big pictures and big headlines — because it’s an effective way to communicate. Not necessarily ‘Headless Man Found in Topless Bar’ headlines, but we want a tabloid look. We don’t want it to just look like news items and a series of blogs.”

Sounds pretty 20th century. But that’s OK, says Bowman: “I like to think there are columnists who are out there and not being read like columnists were when I was growing up — and the only thing against them is that they’re, say, 52. That doesn’t disqualify them for me.”

Bowman says mlb.com gets a whopping 60 million unique users per month, which is higher than its Nielsen traffic measurements, during baseball season. But Bowman says he doesn’t want the new site “to just be an adjunct” of mlb.com: “The facts are on mlb.com. But people like to read what people think.”

Still, one wonders how MLB owners will react if their own site runs a screaming headline such as, “Brainless Man Found in Team Owner’s Box.”

Hinted at in the Olbermann article, expanded upon in this article.

I imagine that they'd be too busy fleeing the zombie hordes to comment.

Yet another shard of the media for me to avoid.

Because Sporting News Today is such a big hit? I've been a subscriber of Sporting News magazine since 1993 and signed up for the new Today before the thing even debuted last year...and I haven't read it in months now.

Nothing wrong with Olbermann's sportswriting, so long as he doesn't start using it as a pedestal for political views or having guests that make up dreck about the limbic brains of statheads.

They will say, "That's the Commissioner."

Anthony:

That's an interesting comment considering that among all the leagues MLB has the most advanced interactive media approach. For a guy who allegedly doesn't use e-mail Bud Selig has been at the head of a very technology friendly entity.

If it's not "his" idea at minimum he's put the right folks in charge.

Doesn't use e-mail?? But he's got logins on every site out there!

Yep, did it beautifully. Even spent to build out MLB's network when servers 'n storage were cheap. Textbook case of an established firm using technology the right way.

OK, I.T.'s even cheaper now, but, didn't MLB Advance Media lease bandwidth to the NCAA and others? And compare that MLB Network launch to the NFL Network. I'm still waiting for FIOS to come to my house (any ####### day now), but I can easily access MLB.

/When NFLN first came out, they had a Thursday night game between the Ravens 'n Cinncy. I was in Manhattan for business, and I wanted to see the game. I had two choices: over-priced drinks at the ESPN Zone in Times Square, or a gay sports bar in Chelsea.

//For those who are curious: it's just like a regular sports bar. You know, bunch of dudes sitting around watching football. But fantasy has a comparatively different focus.

///Yes, yes, I know, there are plenty of places near 50th. Also the Chinatown hotels carry NFLN. Now... I know this.

People don't go to SportingNews.com. People go to MLB.com.

I might, if Olby actually knew anything about baseball.

I read parts of TSN pretty much every day. Of course I like sports other than the MLB, so college BB, college FB or NFL articles interest me.
If you could link to it, I would have submitted links more than once.

I got a $100 says that Keith would out-geek 90% of primates when it comes to baseball.

Where'd you find a talking $100, and what does it think about the Jays' chances this season?

I got the $100 from your mom for services rendered and it thinks the Jays are only 83% as good as an American equivalent baseball team.

Sounds like an interesting idea, but will MLB allow the columnists/reporters to be genuinely independent instead of spouting the official party line? I have to think that a 1979 equivalent of MLB's newspaper would have featured Seymour Siwoff instead of Bill James, or Joe Reichler instead of Roger Angell.

I like the TSN Today concept. Unfortunately my interest is primarily baseball and soccer. They effectively don't cover one of those and I have plenty of good sources for the other. An MLB-dedicated "newspaper" like TSN Today would probably be something I would read daily if they did it well.

That's not fair. Your mom only ever gives me the non-talking $100s.

Also, sadly enough, I'd be happy if the Jays were only 83% as good as the average of the American teams in our division. This hot start fills me with great trepidation about their inevitable fall.

How truly critical is that? Obviously they shouldn't be sweeping stuff under the rug or worse, outright lying, but I haven't seen evidence of that with either mlb.com or MLBN. If you read an MLB published newspaper I think you go in with eyes wide open that this is a house organ.

I subscribe to that TSN thing but haven't read it in ages; except to ocassionally go to the second page and see what's on national TV that day or night. Time spent there is time not spent here.

Oh, hells no. Olbermann brutes himself about as some kind of baseball guru, but his insights are pedestrian at best. The typical Primate knows more about the game than he does...although he's not quite as far left as the average Primate...;)

I don't know whose decision it was to put that fool on the current season of "24", but good grief, what a nightmare. Absolutely no acting ability, screen presence, charisma, or general talent to speak of.

I thought my mother-in-law was the only one who still watched that ridiculous show.
