MLB: Vizquel hopes to play again in 2009

As a spittoon hugging old-timer used to say to me at the shop..."My only wish is to die with a wrench in my hand.”

Free-agent shortstop Omar Vizquel wants to play at least one more season before ending a Major League career that includes 11 Gold Glove Awards and three All-Star Game appearances.

“I feel really good and I don’t want to retire knowing I can be a little better than I was last season,” the 41-year-old Vizquel said from his home in Issaquah, Wash. “I don’t have anything yet, but I want to play and my agent has been talking to a couple of teams. I can’t tell you who they are.”

Vizquel, released by the Giants at the end of the season after batting .222—the lowest since he batted .220 for the Seattle Mariners during his 1989 rookie season—said he would prefer to stay in the National League.

“I just know the league after playing there for the last four years, so it would be good for me to stay in the National League,” he said.

It was painful to watch him hit last year. He can still field though. I imagine he could play SS defensively until he was 50.

Wow....imagine how he'd hit against pitchers he's not familiar with.

Vizquel is better than Berroa and wayy cheaper than Furcal. I'd approve of a Vizquel signing, but I strongly doubt it will happen.

I admire Omar.

Me too. Man, I really enjoyed watching that cat play in the field during his prime. But when it's over, it's over.

As a Giant fan, I love Omar, even though it was painful to watch him last year.

He's the kind of player who would probably thrive in Japan, and have a pretty decent year. I'd love to see him do that.

Vizquel in a Pads uni would look good for one cheap year. That way he can play about 3 times a week and "mentor" the younguns like Rule 5 pick Cabrera.

Get it done, KT.
