The Chicago White Sox requested waivers on right-hander Bartolo Colon on Wednesday for the purposes of giving him his unconditional release.

He wasn't pitching that bad, heis on the DL and not taking up roster space and you have to pay him til the end of the season anyway after which he will be a free agent. Hell, theres only a couple weeks of the regular season left anyway. What does releasing him serve?

The only thing I can think is that Colon has been blowing off trying to rehab and this is a symbolic move.
That or maybe the Sox (obviously) don't intend on offering him arb and trying to re-sign him so maybe they're being nice and formally releasing him so he can get a head start on talking to teams about a contract for next year?

Sometimes the colon just forces the issue, and causes the release of some unwanted waste.

Unless they need the 40-man roster space...of course they could move him to the 60 day DL. I'm just as confused as you are.

Too bad he's on the DL - my first thought was that an NL team could sign him, so he could throw two or three shutouts. You could probably do that hurt, anyway.

He pitched pretty terribly, actually. His ERA wasn't terrible, but he gave up 13 unearned runs in 62.1 IP. He also coughed up 13 homers, and had a 21/38 BB/K ratio.

They already have Freddy Garcia filling the "fungible veteran who's lost his stuff" role.

In more important news, Jake Peavy is scheduled to pitch on Saturday vs. the Royals. I'm looking forward to that.

Nothing sinister. When the White Sox didn't know where Colon was earlier in the season before he was to report to the minors for a rehab start, Ozzie had this to say to reporters:

“I worry about Colon because Colon was a big-time Michael Jackson fan. He maybe was in LA at his funeral, because I can’t find him. Nobody knows how big of a Michael Jackson fan Colon was. I’m serious. He might be depressed a little bit.
