MLB: White Sox release veteran Bartolo Colon

With my cholesterol counter fritzing-up it was either this or Lasorda to Get Portrait Hung in Smithsonian. Not both.

The Chicago White Sox requested waivers on right-hander Bartolo Colon on Wednesday for the purposes of giving him his unconditional release. The announcement was made Wednesday afternoon prior to the club’s game in Seattle.

Colon, 36, was 3-6 with a 4.19 ERA in 12 starts for the White Sox this season, but had been on the disabled list since July 28 with right elbow inflammation.

Colon has gone 153-103 with a 4.10 ERA in 328 games over 13 big league seasons with Cleveland (1997-2002), Montreal (2002), the Angels, (2004-07), Boston (2008) and two stints with the White Sox, in 2003 and again in 2009, after signing with Chicago as a free agent on Jan. 15.

whom do they request the waivers from?

Why bother?
He wasn't pitching that bad, heis on the DL and not taking up roster space and you have to pay him til the end of the season anyway after which he will be a free agent. Hell, theres only a couple weeks of the regular season left anyway. What does releasing him serve?

The only thing I can think is that Colon has been blowing off trying to rehab and this is a symbolic move.
That or maybe the Sox (obviously) don't intend on offering him arb and trying to re-sign him so maybe they're being nice and formally releasing him so he can get a head start on talking to teams about a contract for next year?

I'm all confused

You're thinking too hard.

Sometimes the colon just forces the issue, and causes the release of some unwanted waste.

Unless they need the 40-man roster space...of course they could move him to the 60 day DL. I'm just as confused as you are.

Figures. When they want him, they can't find him. Now that they have him, they don't want him.

However, this does give him more time to spend with his wife, Pedro and Juan.

And then he'll sign with the Indians in the off season.

I'd lean toward this being a symbolic move. After all, this is the same guy who vanished TWICE this season.

Its so odd, just what is Colon thinking?

And the last thing you want to have to worry about is a wandering colon.

Too bad he's on the DL - my first thought was that an NL team could sign him, so he could throw two or three shutouts. You could probably do that hurt, anyway.

He wasn't pitching that bad

He pitched pretty terribly, actually. His ERA wasn't terrible, but he gave up 13 unearned runs in 62.1 IP. He also coughed up 13 homers, and had a 21/38 BB/K ratio.

They already have Freddy Garcia filling the "fungible veteran who's lost his stuff" role.

In more important news, Jake Peavy is scheduled to pitch on Saturday vs. the Royals. I'm looking forward to that.

#6

Perhaps I'd be better off not knowing, but what's the story there? Is Colon a suspected homosexual/bigamist? Are those Dominican taco joints?

Nothing sinister. When the White Sox didn't know where Colon was earlier in the season before he was to report to the minors for a rehab start, Ozzie had this to say to reporters:

“I worry about Colon because Colon was a big-time Michael Jackson fan. He maybe was in LA at his funeral, because I can’t find him. Nobody knows how big of a Michael Jackson fan Colon was. I’m serious. He might be depressed a little bit.

“To talk to Colon, you’ve got to talk to 20 different people. You got to talk to 30 different cousins, and then to his agent, who talks to his brother, his brother call his wife, his wife say he’s with Pedro, Pedro say he’s with Juan.”

AH! Man, I really misunderstood your sentence. Thanks for clearing that up.

An odd name but hey I am sure he didn't marry for the name.

Since Colon has been cut loose, does that make him prolapsed?

Colon's Cleansers was a great name for a fantasy team. Oh well.
