mlbblogs.com: Giants eyeing Torrealba

SAN FRANCISCO—Preparing for the possibility that they won’t re-sign Bengie Molina, the Giants have contacted the representative for Yorvit Torrealba, another free-agent catcher.

Giants general manager Brian Sabean said last Monday that the Giants wouldn’t offer Molina, their regular catcher for the previous three seasons, more than a one-year contract, given 22-year-old Buster Posey’s impending readiness for the Major Leagues. Sabean also reiterated his belief that at least one other team will offer Molina the multiyear contract he seeks.

Conceivably, if the Giants signed Torrealba, their backup catcher from 2001-05, he would handle the bulk of the playing time until Posey developed sufficiently.

Let me get this straight. They wouldn’t play Torrealba when they controlled his rights for 6 years, but are willing to sign and play Torrealba so he can block Buster Posey for another year? I love the Giants.

That's not fair. He wasn't a proven veteran back then.

I think it works like this: The Giants want a major league catcher to share the job and be a mentor before they throw Posey into the deep end. BMolina let it be clearly known that he had no interest at all in this sort of arrangement.

Not many teams can say their failure to sign their cleanup hitter will leave them short a backup catcher next year.

It's a special kind of genius.

that might be a good move.

It depends on the execution. Torrealba could be an outstanding backup.

Or the excuse to trade Buster Posey! Okay, not really but I wouldn't be surprised if Sabean and Bochy really do block Posey.

Really, its Bochy would do it, since he tried as hard as possible to not play Posey.

He won't, and for a very simple reason. If he tries, I'll kill him.

Oh come on now... it's not like we just went out and got Bengie Molina when we had Yorvit!

First we trade some dudes (I forget who) for AJ Pierzynski. (career wOBA 10 points less than Yorvit)... then we got 3 years of Mike Matheny (worse hitter than both, then injured for a year), THEN we got Bengie. Who you know, is kinda a little bit better than Yorvit if you squint kinda sorta.

So, no. Everything seems perfectly normal in Giants land.

That's a pretty liberal definition of "major league catcher".

I will always remember Torrealba because in one of those old PS2 EA MLB games, the announcer said his name "Yorvit . . . Toreeba".
