MLB.com: Angels beat Yanks, claim West

The Great AL West Race of 2008 will surely go down as one of the most nail-biting pennant races of all time.

In an Angels clubhouse loaded with big-name, big-money performers, Dustin Moseley and Robb Quinlan quietly go their own way. On Wednesday, the soft-spoken duo emerged in starring roles in a 4-2 victory over the Yankees at Angel Stadium that clinched a tie for the American League West title.
...
When the Mariners held on to beat the Rangers, a roar went up from fans who’d remained behind in the stadium watching on the scoreboard. The Angels owned their fourth division title in five years.
...
The earliest AL West clinching before this came in 1971, when the A’s wrapped it up on Sept. 15.

Fittingly, Francisco Rodriguez registered the save, his 56th, leaving him one shy of Bobby Thigpen’s all-time single-season record.

Jose Arredondo sprayed the remaining crowd with the groundskeeper's hose. It was an awesome sight. Anaheim tap in lieu of champagne.
