MLB.com: Angels’ offense flies off Burnett

On Friday night, [A.J.] Burnett had no problem finding the exit inside the visitors’ clubhouse at Angel Stadium, swinging the door open violently and sending it crashing into the adjacent wall. It was an understandable outburst in the wake of an 8-2 loss at the hands of the Angels.

The blame for this latest defeat could easily be cast upon a number of players. Burnett was partly responsible in light of the eight runs he surrendered in an outing that certainly did nothing to increase his value on the trade market. Toronto’s defense also lagged and the offense came up empty once again.

So in his last six starts, he’s allowed eight runs three times (Angels, Brewers, Orioles), had two good outings (Braves, Reds), and one decent outing (Cubs).

I was pretty busy last night with the little one, so I was mostly listening to this game and watching a bit when I had the chance.

Seems to me Burnett's problem was throwing a breaking ball in the dirt, getting the Angel hitter to swing and miss to get ahead, and then coming back with a fastball. If the Angel hitter fouled it off, A.J. gave him a nother fastball until it was hit.

Contrast this to what the Dodgers were doing last weekend: Keep throwing the breaking ball in the dirt, farther away each time, until they stop swinging. Which they never did.

Million dollar arm, ten cent head.

While I agree with #2, Burnett was not helped by the defence last night. There was a missed double play (both ends), a misplayed ball in the outfield and a booted ball by Scutaro. The Jays looked just as listless last night as they did under Gibbons.

But...but...but Richard Griffin told me that without mean ol' Frank Thomas, the Blue Jays were a cohesive team of awesomeness, scrapping out runs and wins scrappily!

Veritable Scrappy Doos.

Seeing as the blue jays are going nowhere this season, maybe they'd want to not keep him in games almost as punishment and kill his stats.

Not really apropos of anything: the Angels have not thrown out an opposing basestealer since June 18, and have allowed 22 consecutive stolen bases. We're turning opposing baserunners into Kevin McReynolds.

Will Burnett opt out?

Burnett will opt out after he gets traded at the deadline and puts up a 2 month run of 3.20ish ERA.

I really wish the Cubs would jump on this bargain. I think Ricciardi is terrified of having him not opt out and being stuck with the contract.

Burnett is sort of the consolation price to the team that doesn't get Sabathia, is he not?

Isn't he vying with Bedard for that second place status behind C.C.? I guess it depends on which guy's flaws bother you more.
