MLB.com: Barrett, Prior at different stages of rehab

As soon as I see the word “Birmingham” in a MLB-related article, I know “uh-oh, this isn’t going to be a happy story”.

In other news on San Diego’s injury front, Mark Prior is in Birmingham, Ala., getting feedback on the results of the MRI on his right shoulder.

“Prior is in Birmingham, as we speak, talking to (orthopedic surgeon) James Andrews about his shoulder,” [manager Bud] Black said. “We’ll know more probably over the weekend, or maybe early next week, about the plan for Mark as we move into the summer.”

Prior, who hasn’t pitched in the Majors since 2006 due to myriad arm injuries, had to shut down a recent throwing session after feeling discomfort in the shoulder.

“It’s frustrating for him,” Black said. “He had high expectations and hopes [for] bouncing back from the surgery, especially how he felt in Spring Training. So I’m sure this has been a big frustration for him.”

I understand that Prior's status is "year-to-year."

That's unfortunate. I think a lot of the backlash against Prior from the Cubs fanbase is misguided. The media made Wood and Prior the main facilitators for all the great things we allegedly had coming our way after 2003. It's the fault of neither man that things didn't pan out that way.

Is there a good reason for a person who is likely at almost any point in the season to be an inconvenient distance from Birmingham to have to travel there to get "feedback on the results of the MRI on his right shoulder?" I don't understand why any player would have to physically be in Dr. Andrews's office to discuss the status of his arm. Maybe if the office was in Maui, but Birmingham? Why?

1) Prior is almost certainly not Andrews' only patient.
2) "Your pitching career is finished" is not a message that should be delivered over a phone call.

I would think Andrews could serve more patients, certainly no less, by conducting a portion of his business electronically rather than dragging them into the office for every discussion.

I totally agree, and if that's the case here I understand completely. I was responding to what seems like repeated cases of players flying to Birmingham for consultations. Go ahead and Google "flew to Birmingham to meet with James Andrews" to see what I mean.

Michael Jordan resembles this remark.

Given that Andrews probably hasn't seen Prior in some time, it's also not surprising he might want to give him an exam, too.

Andrews is a busy guy. He performed Chris Capuano's TJ surgery today, too.

How long does that procedure take to perform these days, given how commonplace it is?

90 minutes or so.
