MLB.com: Bucs nearing deal for infielder Crosby

A source with knowledge of the negotiations confirmed that the Pirates are close to coming to an agreement with free-agent shortstop Bobby Crosby. Nothing, though, has been made official yet.
...
Until now, Crosby has spent his entire career in Oakland, which selected him in the first round of the 2001 First-Year Players Draft. Crosby was the American League Rookie of the Year in 2004, despite hitting .239, and he has reached a higher batting average only once in the past five seasons.

Crosby is coming off a season in which he appeared in only 97 games while battling injuries. The infielder finished the year hitting .223 with six homers and 29 RBIs.

Last season was also Crosby’s final season of a five-year contract that paid a total of $12.75 million. He pocketed $5.25 million in 2009, but isn’t likely to approach that salary figure in any deal this winter.

Crosby's likely to be better than anyone else the Bucs can run out there, if he can stay healthy. Which isn't saying much.

Marco Scutaro is looking better with every story like this...

The Pirates are unbelievably hopeless. I can't wait until 2013, when they trade a disgruntled McCracken to the Yankees for more crap.

Quinton McCracken plays for the Pirates now? And unretired?

I'll be honest. I really thought he'd wind up out of baseball after we finally cut bait.

Crosby's tenure with the A's was endlessly frustrating. He couldn't stay on the field. And when he was healthy, he just couldn't lay off the low and away breaking pitch. How many times did I watch him feebly strike out swinging? Then he was allegedly going to change his approach, and move closer to the plate, but that plan seemed to go by the wayside. Argh.

On the plus side, the guy showed his socks, which is extremely cool.

I'm writing up the player comments for the THT preview, and I just finished Crosby. I noticed that for the second consecutive year, the projection thinks that he'll "improve" (this time to a .667 OPS), which would be his highest single season OPS since 2005. The projection system seems to think that Bobby Crosby is a major leaguer.

Do you guys know why the Pirates did this? Because some other team claimed Luis Cruz on waivers. Bobby Crosby seems like a good replacement for Luis Cruz.

I find it very hard to believe any team couldn't find someone better than Crosby to play SS. Of course I found it very hard to believe that about the A's too.

Yes! I'm finally free after 2013.

This is just hilariously awful. As a fan of the Angels I watched Crosby a lot and I haven't seen a player go from solidly above average to craptabulous so quickly. The people of Pittsburgh deserve better - like Gary DiSarcina, v. 2010.

Watching the Pirates make moves is like watching someone with Alzheimer's struggle to remember the faces of their grandchildren.

If Hollywood ever makes a movie about them not making the Moneyball movie, I nominate Bobby Crosby to play Brad Pitt not playing Billy Beane.

This deal is done, per my brother in Pgh. I'm happy with it.. as Mike E points out, Crosby is likely to be better than anyone else the Pirates can run out there and is likely to cost very little. On the off chance he bounces back large, he'll add a little production. If he doesn't bounce back, you cut him and you're no worse off than when you started.

Yeah. Million bucks guaranteed, plus $500k in incentives that he won't earn if he sucks.

Given the crappy SS market this offseason, I can live with that, I guess.

I'll take the suspense out of it for you. He won't be making that 500k.

Seems okay to me. There's a very, very, very, very small chance Crosby recaptures some of the magic of his rookie year, he's fine as a backup, and what else are they going to spend a million bucks on? The draft?
