MLB.com: Flat Sox can’t support promising Hudson

Monday’s loss spoiled a solid outing from South Siders rookie Daniel Hudson, who pitched admirably while making his first Major League start. But because Hudson didn’t receive any run support, he took his first big league loss—and his first loss at any level since June 15, a span of 14 starts. Hudson made it through five innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits with four strikeouts and four walks.

It’s not newsworthy that the White Sox lost, but Daniel Hudson is an interesting story. Fifth-round draft pick out of Old Dominion last year, started the year in Low-A Kannapolis, and pitched his way up to the majors.

Cumulatively, he went 14-5 with a 2.32 ERA and 166 strikeouts to just 34 walks over 147 1/3 innings.  During the broadcast, Hawk Harrelson and Steve Stone were trying to think of a pitcher made the climb from A-ball to Triple-AAA and up to the majors all in one season, but they were stumped.

Are there any precedents?

Wilson Alvarez and Edwin Correa both pitched in A ball the same year as their first MLB start.

I guess David Clyde doesn't count. He went from high school to the majors without bothering with A ball.

Larry Dierker went from rookie ball to the majors (at 17). Only a cup of coffee in the majors and only 9 starts in the minors.

Dwight Gooden went from A ball in 1983 to dominating MLB hitters in 1984 to one of the greatest pitching seasons ever in 1985 to league-average coke addict by 1988 -- beat that!

Shouldn't Hawk Harrelson and Steve Stone have done a little research before beginning their broadcast? I mean, it isn't as if Hudson had came in the game as a reliever. And even then...

Based on the sampler pack of injuries suffered by the Jays rotation in the last year or so, I'm actually somewhat surprised to see that they don't have anyone who fits this description.

I think what they were referring to with Hudson was that he was 1) starting, and 2) it was his first full year of pro ball. So Lannan and Hill wouldn't count, for example, but somebody like Garza, would.

The Fernandez one is funny, since Harrelson was broadcasting his games. But I think it's more the novelty of Hudson being a fifth-round pick and catching everybody by surprise that's blowing their minds.

In 1983, Danny Cox pitched in:

A
AA
AAA
MLB

then got his debut vs. Steve Carlton and went 10 innings in a 1-0 loss (Game Score=84).

Brian Matusz started this season, his first in full season ball, in the Carolina League and finished it as the best pitcher in the Oriole rotation; however, he skipped AAA.

If memory serves, Tom Gordon climbed the ladder from A-ball to Kansas City in one year about 20 years ago.

A-ball to Triple-AAA

I don't mean to be pedantic but it's a pet peeve of mine: Triple-AAA is AAAAAAAAA. Only Roberto Petagine and Crash Davis are allowed to play in that league.

Triple-A, or alternatively AAA, is where Hudson played.

This doesn't really count, but during Nomo's rookie year the Dodgers started him out in Class A before realizing that wasn't really his talent level. He went on to win ROY that year.

Do teams still give writers (and presumably broadcasters) little fact sheets like "Willie Bloomquist has hit safely in his last seven night games"? If so, it would be their job to figure out something interesting to say about every rookie.
I would think that most old-time broadcasters just have what they read or were told and don't look stuff up but just ask someone to look it up for them. And if the random thought that pops up during a lull in the play is original, just say it out loud and hope it makes you remember part of the answer.
