MLB.com: Garza, Pena lead Rays to win vs. Jays

The Rays reached a franchise-first 80 wins on Wednesday night courtesy of Matt Garza’s right arm and one piece of very timely hitting from Carlos Pena. When the dust finally settled, Tampa Bay snapped a two-game home losing skid with a series-evening 1-0 win over Toronto in front of a crowd of 12,678 at Tropicana Field.
...
The Rays first baseman broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning, blasting David Purcey’s first pitch of the frame over the right-field fence. The rookie Purcey notched a career-high 11 strikeouts, but was outdueled by Garza, who had previously beaten Toronto’s ace Roy Halladay twice this season.

12,678?  That’s even lower than last night.

For the love of God, call up Eddie Money at whatever county fair he’s playing - or see if they can get Foreigner on short notice - to boost the attendence.

Does anybody think they'll pack the Trop for playoff games? I really hope so.

the braves weren't packing the park in 1991, but in the playoffs they sold out every game.

i'm sure there will be a few newly minted rays fans in the seats come october.

The Jays are 0-5 when they have a shot at going six games over .500.

These are the sort of games that have kept the Jays from contending--wasting absolutely magnificent pitching performances. The Jays have lost seven games by teams scoring two or fewer runs this year (plus 17 losses in games where the pitching held the opposition to three or less).

This is the sort of thing where Barry Bonds might have made a difference to a contending club. Heck, were the Jays 8-9 in those game they would be 76-56. Heck, as it is, the Jays Pythagorean record is 73-59.

Garza is the Jays' daddy this year--31 IP ... 1 ER. He has an 0.29 ERA against Toronto and a 4.32 ERA against everybody else. He can thank the Jays for his 3.53 ERA this season.

Absolutely PWN3D.

Best Regards

John

Speaking of Bonds for the Rays instead of the Jays - the number 12,678 suggests that Friedman should have returned Borris' text message. It's not too audacious to suggest 17,500 if Bonds were in the lineup tonight. Maybe all in right field bleachers, but still there.

Maybe the Rays should bus in some Nats fans.

Oh, wait a minute...

Brutal night for Purcey. He pitches the best game of his career so far... and loses.

Oh, wait a minute...

And maybe they could bus in some O's fans, too!

If they were to fill that dome up, it'd be very hard to play in. We're talking Metrodome with better accoustics for noise to bounce on. One time when I was there some dude was talking to his Girlfriend who was sitting in the outfield seats.... by yelling. The voices carried great.

Take Guy home tonight!
