MLB.com: [Kelvim] Escobar has right shoulder tear

Angels right-hander Kelvim Escobar disclosed today that he has a tear in his pitching shoulder and is concerned that it is a career-threatening injury. Surgery, he said, is a possibility.

“I’m concerned—I don’t know what’s going to happen,” Escobar told reporters. “I don’t even know if I’ll be able to pitch again.”
...
“I’m still young,” he said. “I’ll be 32 in two weeks, but retirement is getting into my head, because it’s hard to rehab. I want to be out there playing, and I’ve done everything I can do to be healthy.”

Escobar will continue to try to strengthen the shoulder with workouts, but he admitted that surgery could be a possibility.

“They would look at it and fix whatever I have,” he said. “But that would take 10 months to recover from. They’re not sure I’d be able to come back after surgery. This could be the end of my career.”

Escobar is in the second year of a three-year, $28.5 million contract.

from Bruce Hurst of the Press-Enterprise (pe.com):

Escobar said that by April 15, if he cannot throw pain-free, he would seek a second opinion from Dr. David Altchek, who is the New York Mets orthopedic surgeon. If surgery is the last resort, it would cost Escobar at least 10 months, he said. But, not having the supraspinata muscle in the back of his shoulder may force him into retirement.

"They're not sure if I'd be able to come back after surgery because not having that muscle is not going to help me," he said.

I fear a Kendry Morales /Gary Matthews Jr. to the Giants for Zito trade on the horizon...
(they will bench Matthews so he waives his no-trade-clause)

Sure, Jeff Weaver would listen if the Angels called.

Whoa, he tore his supraspinatus? That's a rotator cuff tear;
   4. Halofan Posted: March 26, 2008 at 06:43 PM (#2721236)
RFLOH: worse than that - he was born WITHOUT a supraspinatus muscle.

Is Bill Bavasi nodding sagely somewhere?!?

Wait, so what did he tear? I read your excerpt too quickly and got the mistaken impression that they are considering removing the supraspinatus.

They don't say what he actually tore but considering the context it would appear to be the labrum or maybe some other part of the rotator cuff.

I think we should reconsider Seattle's chances of winning the division.

Seattle should re consider signing Barry Bonds

I think (hope) we should reconsider Oakland's chances. How wonderful would it be if Harden stayed healthy and they won it?

You should have stopped at "Harden stayed healthy"... That's a long shot on itself.
   12. baudib Posted: March 26, 2008 at 07:27 PM (#2721273)
No, Oakland has no shot.
   13. Crispix Attacks Posted: March 26, 2008 at 07:29 PM (#2721276)
How wonderful would it be if Harden stayed healthy, they were near the top of the division in July, and they signed Barry Bonds and won it?

It would be more wonderful if they traded for Willie McGee and Harold Baines.

Wow, the new, broad meaning of the word "trade" has already spread to here from the Saltamaskgs thread.

I think a vacation in Guantanamo Bay would be more enjoyable. Maybe volunteer work as a mine field clearer in Afghanistan would be fun. Watching Bonds win in Oakland would be my worst personal hell.

Even better!

Good thing Oakland didn't trade Haren and Swisher this past offseason.

Please stick to the narrative Vaux. According to the experts it is impossible.

The A's have a guy already at Barry's position. He hit 147 OPS+ last season, for the major league minimum salary. I don't see the A's throwing $10 million at Barry to post slightly better rates as a part-time only player.
   21. Crispix Attacks Posted: March 26, 2008 at 08:22 PM (#2721304)
We'll see if Cust can keep that up while striking out 230 times.

Besides, the guy at Bonds's position is actually Emil Brown.
   22. McGwire's Silence (Sowers the Seed of Love) Posted: March 26, 2008 at 08:28 PM (#2721310)
Always loved the A's: lost the last of my milk-teeth watching skinny McGwire (alright that's a bit of an exaggeration, but it sounds nice doesn't it...?). And I would love it if the A's found a place for Bonds. Beane is so good at locating undervalued commodities. Especially those with upside. Is there currently a more undervalued commodity, with more upside, than Barry Lamar Bonds...? I can't help but thin kthere could be a way to get both Cust and Bonds plenty of PAs.
   23. Johnny Clash Posted: March 26, 2008 at 08:30 PM (#2721311)
Barry ought not to be playing the outfield at this point. His position is DH.

Anyhow, condolences to the Angels fans. It's no fun losing your best players to injury.

   26. Walt Davis Posted: March 26, 2008 at 11:29 PM (#2721393)
I think the Mariners are going to win the AL West.

I think sometime around mid-August, when the AL West is 5-167 against the rest of the AL (granted 45-0 against the NL) and the Yankees are floundering behind the Sox, Indians and Tigers, Bud Selig will announce that there will be no AL West winner but instead a 2nd wild card.

I think sometime around mid-August, when the AL West is 5-167 against the rest of the AL

So, they're going to go 4-166 the rest of the way?

Because Oakland just split against the defending champs, and looked pretty good doing it.

(and yes, I recognize hyperbole - but I suspect the AL West will surprise a lot of people this season).
   28. baudib Posted: March 27, 2008 at 12:21 AM (#2721418)
It's still early.

Emil Brown ought not to be playing the outfield at this point. His position is AAA filler.

He can hit lefties. There's a place for him on an MLB roster.

And, to second Clash, condolences to the Angels. It's more fun if teams stay healthy and you see them at their best.
