MLB.com: Mets ride Beltran’s slam to big win

The Mets’ recent Bullpen Infection Tour continues!

Carlos Beltran hit a game-winning grand slam on Friday night, and the Mets, held silent over the previous eight innings, parlayed that into a 5-4 victory over the Marlins.

With two outs in the ninth, Marlins closer Kevin Gregg loaded the bases on two ground-ball singles and a hit batsman, then served up the first-pitch grand slam, which needed only seconds to clear Dolphin Stadium’s right-field fence.

Luis Ayala recorded the final three outs for his third save with the Mets.

Well, Ayala also gave up four hits and two runs before getting those outs and barely escaping with the win… Mets now lead the Phils by two games.

Ayala isn't your prototypical closer by any stretch but he doesn't walk many and doesn't give up too many homers. Even today, it took a poor defensive decision by Jose Reyes for him to give up as many runs as he did today.

Ayala will do as the closer for now. I can live with a closer that makes the other team beat him, not beat himself like so many of the other Met relievers.

Why didn't Manuel bring in Pedro II for Jacobs? Or Heilman for Helms?

AJM, if Jacobs doesn't make an out, there's only righties up after that. It's definitely an option but not a no-brainer.

More importantly, I think Manuel wants someone to step up and be counted on to get both lefties and righties out.

Then he could've brought in Heilman. Jacobs is useless against lefties.

Then they'd probably just PH for Jacobs. Also, would Heilman be available? He threw three innings (60-70 pitches) on Tuesday. Again, I think this is Manuel wanted to challenge someone to do the job.

It's possible they PH for Jacobs. But who was left on the bench? Almezaga? He doesn't frighten me. Was there anyone else?

Manuel shouldn't be risking games just to challenge someone.

Ayala complained of leg soreness afterward, I'm sire Al Reyes is on his way. Could Duaner be buried any deeper in the mix? Looks like he's thrown his last important inning.

Sanchez's basically being used as second ROOGY right now and he's not going to get many chances to pitch like that. His ERA was 3.32 on July 20th and 10 bad innings normally shouldn't warrant being placed in the doghouse but Sanchez's stuff has looked mediocre. Right now, Stokes has taken over his job as a setup main and Manuel is going to ride the hot hand.

I was hoping that Burgos would give the Mets a shot in the arm but he's struggled in the minors and I doubt he'll get a shot this season.

I love Mets threads. If Manuel uses a whole bunch of pitchers, there is general b!tching that he burns through his pen too fast. If he only uses one or two, why didn't he use more?

Playing in New York may not be any harder than playing elsewhere, but managing sure is.

Don't get the idea I'm campaigning for Sanchez, I kinda wish they had the guts to release him. I suspect his moment came and went some time ago.

I think it'd be silly to give up on Duaner. For one thing, it's not like he's blocking anyone and his secondary pitches are still very good. If he ever regains some velocity, he can still be a very good setup man. It might not ever happen but there's no reason to release him now.
