MLB.com: Nationals sign left-hander Villone

The Nationals continue to add insurance to the organization by signing left-hander Ron Villone to a Minor League contract on Friday. He will play for Triple-A Syracuse and be its only left-hander out of the bullpen.

Washington added Villone in case one of the team’s three left-handed relievers—Michael Hinckley, Wil Ledezma or Joe Beimel—falters in the bullpen. Acting general manager Mike Rizzo declined to comment for this story, and Villone was unavailable for comment.

In other news, the Nationals are one of a handful of teams that are interested in right-hander Chad Gaudin, who was released by the Cubs recently. He can be a starter and reliever. However, the Nationals likely won’t overbid for services; the team is willing to give him a Minor League deal.

It's like a band-aid over a bullet wound.

I looked at the pitchers on the Nationals roster the other day and was shocked how crappy they are. I would be saving all the money you can in preparation for the enormous bonus Strasburg is about to receive.

They don't need to save money. They've got plenty.

The mistake of the offseason was after the Odalis Perez thing fell through, they got arrogant and assumed that they had enough pitching on hand, because the kids were doing so well.

We're about one injury away from having Tyler Clippard make 30 starts.
