MLB.com: Rockies out of it early in Wells’ return

When Ian Stewart said yesterday that the Rockies were still in it, he must not have been aware that Kip Wells was Monday’s scheduled starter.

With a spot open in the Rockies starting rotation, manager Clint Hurdle made it clear that Monday night was Kip Wells’ tryout for a permanent role.

Wells (1-2) couldn’t escape the first inning, and the Rockies were blasted by the Dodgers, 16-10, in front of 38,291 fans at Coors Field. Colorado now trails Los Angles and Arizona by seven games in the National League West.

Wells, who had been out since April 29 with a blood clot in his right hand, retired just one of the 10 batters he faced before being mercifully replaced by Hurdle… Wells finished his night by giving up eight runs on seven hits, walking one and throwing a wild pitch in just one-third of an inning.

Given that the Dodger pitcher reached base (on an error), who was the one batter in the Dodger lineup that Wells retired? You get one guess.

And even Jones got on base twice tonight.

Counting Stults' reached on error in the first, the Dodgers got on 25 out of 50 plate appearances.

I didn't hear it, but Vin Scully was roasting Wells. The Dodger Thoughts commenters were fairly shocked by his tone.

Wells has done a lot better coming out of the pen the last couple of years. I would highly, highly suggest they leave him there.

The good news here was that Tulowitzki went 5-for-5. Getting Tulo on track is more important to this franchise, in both the short and the long term, than anything Kip Wells does.

I forgot about Kip Wells. First I thought it was David Wells, and then I thought that while I was away this weekend, JP Ricciardi had inexplicably waived Vernon Wells and the Rockies had picked him up.

Last night they would have been better off with Dawn Wells on the mound.

More Hurdle than Wells, because his complaint was that Wells was still out there when he clearly had nothing.

Juan Pierre. I didn't look.

EDIT: And since he didn't even play, I was wrong.

#9 -- since Pierre is on the DL, no, he doesn't get a hit.

But I bet even injured he has a better chance of hitting than Jones.

Jones had a hit and also reached on an HBP.

The Rockies became the sixth team this season and the fifth this month to lose a game when getting 20 or more hits.
