MLB: Prior plans to pitch again in future

Yea…what Criswell said.

Now there is no date set, but Prior is resolute about his return.

“I wouldn’t have done the surgery if I didn’t think I wasn’t going to pitch again,” Prior said. “If I decided I didn’t want to play, I just would have let it heal on its own and move forward. I feel like I can pitch. The good thing I’ve got going is I’m still young and I want to play. I want to pitch at a high level again and that is one of the reasons why I did the surgery.”

...Prior said it will take at least six weeks for the surgery to heal, at which point he will be re-evaluated. He couldn’t say when he would be able to return to a mound but is hopeful of playing catch before next spring.

“I don’t think it will be until February,” Prior said. “That is almost nine full months of rehab. Knowing what I have already gone through and the extent of the surgeries that I’ve had, I don’t see it taking that long. As far as getting back on the mound, that might be a different story but just picking up a ball and playing catch, that should be before that.”

Is it too late to learn to throw lefty?

Next time someone fatuously derides innings caps for developing pitchers, they should be forced to reflect on Prior's career.

Babied pitchers get hurt too. Look at Harden.

I believe it's better to err on the side of caution.

Or at least be an advocate of the training methods employed in Cuba.

That there are exceptions to a rule doesn't necessarily negate the validity of that rule.

I actually agree with you that it's better to err on the side of caution. Having said that, I don't like the "I told you so" mentality that pops up when pitchers get hurt because it's hard to say how much of it is selective perception.

In all seriousness, I'm surprised that some of the pitchers with shredded arms don't try to pitch with the opposite arm. I seem to recall reading that Billy Wagner did that as an adolescent.

I feel bad for Prior, but (according to Baseball Ref) he seems to have made about $10MM in his career.

So I don't feel THAT bad for him.

You ever try throwing with your off hand, Dan?

It's a tougher adjustment than switching from being a righthanded batter to a lefthanded batter.

Along those lines, I've never understood how some players (Rickey Henderson, etc.) end up throwing with one hand but batting from the other side. Then, my dad's sort of the same way--he throws and bats righthanded, but writes with his left hand. I don't get it.

I'm righthanded all the way, except I use a fork with my left hand.

There's an opening on my softball team for a pitcher. He can throw lefty if he wants and he could probably run faster and hit the ball harder than anybody on my team which isn't saying much.

How much money would he have made if his arm hadn't burned out?

This is kind of a pet peeve of mine. The current state of the art can't find a good relationship between workload and injury. Maybe it's heartless to say that, but that's where the field is. If you want to protect young pitchers, find something that does predict injury well. The 47th iteration of pitcher abuse points, now with special second-guessing coefficients and "we weren't really serious about Randy Johnson blowing out his arm" discounts does not advance the field.

The amount of money teams invest has made them overly cautious, but not without reason.
