MLB: Beat reporter Jim Street answers Mariners fans’ questions

about having the first Partial Hall of Fame Vote of the season!  Woooooooo!

Like many Mariners fans, I think Edgar Martinez was the most loyal, most dependable, and most productive of anyone to ever put on a Mariners uniform. I loved Ken Griffey Jr. and Alex Rodriguez when they were Mariners, but Martinez was a cut above in many ways. Is there anything fans can do to help get him into the Hall of Fame next year?

Well, Dennis, unless you are a member of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America, there really is nothing you can do. The voters consist of BBWAA members who have covered baseball for a minimum of 10 consecutive years.

That includes me and I intend to vote for Martinez next month when my Hall of Fame ballot arrives. I expect it to be a close call for Gar, mainly because he spent most of his career as the designated hitter and National League writers seem to be reluctant to vote for a DH, which does not exist in the Senior Circuit.

It seems fitting that Martinez would become the first DH inducted into the Hall of Fame. After all, the award is named: The Edgar Martinez Designated Hitter Award.

Edgar Martinez is my favorite baseball player of any kind ever anywhere. Even I can acknoweldge that Griffey and Rodriguez were more productive when in an M's uniform.

The Edgar Martinez Designated Hitter Award.

Awarded since 1973!! (no, it wasn't the Edgar then) An award so obscure that b-r doesn't list it.

Aren't The Edgar Martinez Designated Hitter Award and the Silver Slugger redundant?

When is the league going to get around retiring Ron Blomberg's number? What's the holdup?

As soon as he comes off the DL...again...and again...

No, it won't be a close call. If he's lucky, he'll start off somewhere around where Raines did - in the 20% range.

The guy is remembered as a career DH, who still had health issues, and who didn't hit any major milestones. His entire candidacy is based around his excellent offensive rate stats, which are partially balanced by both the era in which he played, and the (relative) shortness of his career. He's not going to get minor league credit, and he's not going to get a big bump from his OBP.

EDIT: Of course, it should be recognized that this guy, answering questions from Seattle fans, is not going to be stupid enough to rip on Edgar's chances, even if he does think that Edgar either isn't deserving or isn't going to make it.
