mlbtradeumors.com: Mets, Braves Swap Church For Francoeur

5:04pm: Hubbuch says the deal was straight up, one for one.

5:01pm: David Lennon tweets that Church was traded to Atlanta for Jeff Francoeur

5:00pm: Bart Hubbuch of The NY Post tweets that the Ryan Church has “apparently been traded.” No word yet on any of the details. Stay tuned to MLBTR for updates.

I’ve got to say, pretty awful trade by the Mets. It doesn’t mean much in the long run, but it’s still a bad move, mainly because Francoeur is terrible at playing baseball.

Is this for real? Because I don't get this from the Mets side. I thought Ryan Church was okay. I notice he's having a down year offensively, which still leaves him quite a bit better than Francoeur, and UZR says he's fine defensively, too. Is there something the Mets hate about him?

Hojo says he can fix Frenchy in 10 minutes.

Does he mean "fix" in the Bob Barker way- that seems like it's a little extreme.

   28. Lassus  Posted: July 10, 2009 at 05:32 PM (#3249465)
I feel like I'm betraying my people, but I can't really bring myself to hate this trade, again, because of the sheer comedic value.

Trading for, say, Garret Anderson would have destroyed me utterly, and brought out an endless stream of depression and rage. I'm bummed primarily because it seems like Church is better, and he's been great defensively in the outfield, even over the last couple days showing it off. THAT annoys me. Really, Church, ESPECIALLY since the head injury, hasn't been all that, so I don't see the big deal there.

But in general, really, this could be a lot worse, because at least it's funny. If it BENDS, it's comedy, and this trade is utterly bent.
   29. Raskolnikov  Posted: July 10, 2009 at 05:32 PM (#3249466)
Maybe this is step 1 of including Francoeur in a package for Roy Halladay. Yeah, that's it. That must be the master plan.

You think you know suck now, just wait until you get a look at Frenchy on a daily basis. A Church/Diaz platoon will do just fine. One more outfielder to go...

Not really, when you consider how bad he is. In addition to that, I think his home should be burned down and the ground salted so nothing ever grows there again.
   35. Banta  Posted: July 10, 2009 at 05:33 PM (#3249473)
Ryan Church ####### sucks.

There's suck and then there's Frenchy.

I've watched him play. He's one of the worst hitters I've ever seen. That's not hyperbole, he is in a whole other level. To give up ANYTHING to get Francoeur onto your team, and that includes a roster spot, is completely idiotic and shows that you don't have a clue.

So, in other words, Lastings Milledge for Brian Schneider and Jeff Francoeur.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
   45. Raskolnikov  Posted: July 10, 2009 at 05:36 PM (#3249485)
Let's see, after Francouer comes to NY, Citifield and the Mets will kill his capacity to hit any HRs, which was probably the only thing that Francoeur can do. So that basically makes Jeff Francoeur in a Mets uniform THE ABSOLUTE WORST PLAYER IN BASEBALL HISTORY.
   46. Repoz  Posted: July 10, 2009 at 05:36 PM (#3249486)

Omar has never heard of OBP.

Ryan Church has a career BA of .273 and is hitting .280 this year. Francoeur is a career .266 hitter who's batting .250 this year and hit .239 last year. It doesn't take advanced sabermetrics to notice that Church is the better hitter.

I'd wonder how much Red Bull and coke Ron Darling has to do before offering up something like a positive take on this trade. He's about the only intelligent person in that booth.
   62. Rowland Office Supplies  Posted: July 10, 2009 at 05:42 PM (#3249507)
If Frenchy doesn't get it going and the Mets don't get it going...and it turns out that Frenchy not getting it going is a big part of the Mets not getting it going, you could have yourself one butt-ugly scenario. I'd go from worrying about the guy's career to worrying about his mental well-being. Of course, my nightmare is that he does a Hurricane Hazle, leads the Mets to a ring, and becomes undisputed King of New York (dethroning Christopher Walken).
   63. Raskolnikov  Posted: July 10, 2009 at 05:42 PM (#3249508)
Omar: "Some believe that he is a gold glove RFer ... We believe with his age, that there is some upside."

How he can say this with a straight face, I don't know.

"Brainstorming in the office yesterday... John Rico - "Hey, what about this?"

I want to run this John Rico out of town. If your front office guys are brainstorming, and the guy you come up with is Jeff Francoeur, then your front office guys are stupid.

"If you look at the number of games he plays, over 150 every year..."

Uh, Omar, is this actually a good thing? If we can use Francouer's body parts to transplant into Reyes/Beltran/Delgado, then yes, this may be useful.
   64. Banta  Posted: July 10, 2009 at 05:43 PM (#3249510)
What's even better is that Church had been playing center lately for the Mets. This now means that Jeremy Reed will be starting more often than not, Evans will see less playing time, and of course, Francoeur.
   65. Bobby Bonilla's Annuity (Matt)  Posted: July 10, 2009 at 05:43 PM (#3249511)

   66. Swedish Chef  Posted: July 10, 2009 at 05:45 PM (#3249512)
Why would Minaya do this?

Friday afternoon at the office, they're relaxing with a couple of drinks when someone gets an idea: "Let's make crank calls to the other front offices". And then one thing led to another.
   67. ?Donde esta Dagoberto Campaneris?  Posted: July 10, 2009 at 05:45 PM (#3249513)
The only thing better than this deal will be this deal in the month of August if Church rebounds with a dozen homers and the Braves blow past the Mets.

If anyone ever wondered why the old adage about not trading in your division exists, this is why- there's too much risk your GM will #### up spectacularly and it will come right back and bite you. That said, these things often work themselves out- maybe Frenchy provides David Wright the secret tip that restores Wrght's homerun swing.
   68. Bobby Bonilla's Annuity (Matt)  Posted: July 10, 2009 at 05:45 PM (#3249514)
"We like Ryan Church a lot," Minaya said. "But right now we just wanted to change it up a little bit. Unfortunately for him (Church), he got hurt. When he got hurt, he was having a pretty good year. ... We thought we just needed something different. It had nothing to do with not liking Ryan. ... One thing we like about Francoeur is the amount of games that he plays."

This is sad. Very sad.

@63

If that's the case, I suspect the discussion went something like this:

John Rico to Mets staff: "Hey, what about this?"

Minyana to Frank Wren: "What about Francoeur for...

Wren: "DONE!"

Minyana: "..Church."
   72. Banta  Posted: July 10, 2009 at 05:47 PM (#3249518)
Says Bart Hubbach: The #Mets also sent cash to the #Braves in the Ryan Church-Jeff Francoeur trade.

See, once again, yes, Church isn't Kazmir, but holy ####, the level of stupidity to do something like this. It's unholy.

As Lassus notes, at least it is funny.

Just got off the phone with Honeycutt. Church is a fungible platoon partner for Matt Diaz at the very least. Frank Wren is a genius. In the offseason he rebuilt a tattered starting rotation from scratch. He acquired Javy Vasquez and Jair Jurrjens for an A-ball catching prospect (Tyler Flowers) and Edgar Renteria's contract. In the course of half a season he's triaged the Braves most fundamental problems by getting Nate McLouth and getting rid of Francoeur. Ryan Church may not be better than average, but when you're in field with a gaping chest wound you don't complain about being wrapped in plastic wrap as long as the bleeding stops long enough to get you to a doctor.

One thing we like about Francoeur is the amount of games that he plays."

"He likes a lot of them. His teammates say that they can't count how many times they have caught Jeff playing "Guess Who?" or "Hungry Hungry Hippos" on the floor of the clubhouse. He also like games that he makes up in his head and where the only player is himself. With this amount of games being played, Jeff is without a doubt a positive value for this organization."
   91. NM Smith  Posted: July 10, 2009 at 05:57 PM (#3249550)
Harveys, I honestly do not think Francoeur will put up numbers like that over three weeks in the time the Mets have him under control (the next three years). The Francoeur that plays now is not the same toolsy guy who came up and hit crazily for a couple months. Present Francoeur has lost something physically. He just does not have the power anymore. That early Francoeur would swing at everything, but a fastball in his wheelhouse got dumped in the left-field seats almost always. Now, he swings and misses at fastballs down the middle, and even when he seems to make good contact, it's to the warning track at best.

Francoeur has upside the way Dye had upside when we ditched him. He might make a late-career resurgence, but to be honest, he also might not be in MLB long enough to get there.

Then you obviously never had to deal with herpes. It's definitely not as funny as this trade.

It is when a Mets fan gets it, which is approximately every 20 seconds.

This is the first trade that I've had to go to another site to confirm in order to believe it.

I thought Amazin' Avenue was playing a sick, sick joke on its readers. Instead it was Minaya on Mets fans.

Oh, nevermind about what I said about Reed playing center. ANGEL PAGAN IS BACK! JOY JOY JOY!

And Pagan is also a better player than Francoeur. Holy ####.

Oh, and two things to note for real:

1) Ryan Church has gotten some of the worst luck with regards to being accidentally snubbed or whatever you want to call it as any major leaguer I can think of.

2) For everyone, and I'll even admit this included me even if I didn't post anything, that ridiculed the notion brought up hither and yon a few weeks ago that the Braves should hold on to Frenchy to trade him for something, the people who said those things now have their response.
