Moises Alou says World Baseball Classic will likely be his finale

He tells Moises to take the bat that he is holding and to cast it onto the ground…

Moises Alou says he’ll likely turn down offers he has received to play this season, including one from the Philadelphia Phillies, and end his 18-year career after the World Baseball Classic.

And so his final professional at-bat may come in the Classic. The Dominicans play their opening game in Puerto Rico against the Netherlands on Saturday.

“I think I’m going home after this,” Alou said. “I haven’t decided 100 percent, but it looks like it. I’m tired of nagging injuries. Every day it’s something different.”

...“My bat is there,” he said. “If somebody from the American League had called, I was willing to do that. But nobody called.

“I can’t play in the field every day, and it’s hard for me to be a backup. Everyday players hate to pinch-hit. When you get a day off, you hope you’re winning 10-0 so you don’t get in the game.”

...“If this is my last rodeo, it’s going to be a nice one,” he said. “Hopefully we can win it all.”

So, 2100 hits, a 128 OPS+.

Hall of Fame?

That's a big Hall you've got there, Craig.

It's hard to picture Moises Alou using the phrase "If this is my last rodeo..."

Crap. I clicked on this thread just to make a urine crack. And I was beaten to the punch after only 4 posts.

Was it better than mine?

Cuz I'll delete it if it is - I love a good Alou peeing on his hands joke.

Not a Hall of Famer by any means, but he's had quite a career. How many others were All Stars with 5 different teams? Alou and Sheffield are the only ones I know of.

I guess he can be scratched off the "injury watch" list of players who get hurt every year.

I bet he's having prostate trouble.

Excellent player, Hall of Fame quality I guess if he had 1,000 more hits.

I do have to say, while he wasn't an iron man beyond that -- making it back twice after missing not just one but two entire seasons.... that's pretty impressive.

Moises Alou could hit.

I wonder what he means when he said that no AL team called because if no team offered him an incentive laden deal to DH at least part time, then I'd be surprised but it may that no team offered enough money just to make it worth his while.

Feels like a million years ago that I was watching him as a raw rookie with the Pirates.

He had quite a career.

I'll always associate Moises Alou with the year 2004.

Good riddance, Moises, you whiny little #####...

I take it you are too young to have been watching The Expos @ Cards on Sept 16, 1993 in a bar, like I was.

He might hit .400 in the WBC and get some offers. The guy can probably still rake
   22. Meatwad is on team keefe Posted: March 06, 2009 at 07:30 AM (#3094226)
yeah but would you use a rake after him? espically knowing what he does to his hands, i wouldnt

I'm stumped. Rickey Henderson immediately came to mind... but how the heck did this guy not be selected in an ASG after 1991? He only made it as an Athletic and Yankee.

Roberto Alomar, Kevin Brown, and Roger Clemens did it with 4 teams.

I always thought he was a pretty good comp for Jim Rice.
   25. Gonfalon Bubble Posted: March 06, 2009 at 11:08 AM (#3094252)

Yes, teamates feared high fiving him.

From a post of mine last fall, FYI.

If he had been able to play in 95% (154 a year) of his team's games since he became a full-timer in 1993, instead of the 76.5% that he has, we'd be talking about a player with 1376 R, 2649 H, 523 2b, 48 3b, 412 HR, 1598 RBI and 915 BB to go along with .303 average and 128 OPS+. Not bad for a guy that didn't become a regular starter until age 26. Of course this is all revisionist history, but it goes to show that he's been an HOF-calibre hitter over a long period (and appears to still have the ability at age 42).
   29. jwb Posted: March 06, 2009 at 07:30 PM (#3094783)
He's playd for Cañada College, like Harold Reynolds and Rafael Bournigal. If their fight song doesn't have the line

La Cañada, estamos en guardia por ti!

it certainly should.
   30. Walt Davis Posted: March 07, 2009 at 02:44 AM (#3095073)

Well, a 128 OPS+ from a corner OF is only HOF-caliber for a select few. The 300 BA (with all those additional PA) would be more relevant.
