Mouthpiece Sports: The Jake Peavy Negotiations, As Illustrated On The Chess Board

!?

Now, let’s take a look at the Cubs. After a long period of back-and-forth, the Cubs finally decided that the Padres were asking too much for Peavy, so they gave up on him.

Take a look at this board....

This is from this year’s World Chess Championship between Kramnik and Anand. To the untrained eye, neither side seems to have much of an advantage, right? Black has one more Pawn than White, but interestingly, Black decided he had had enough, and resigned the match at this point. The reasons are a bit complicated to explain, but after studying the board for a while, it becomes clear that Black is doomed here.

Casual fans often grow frustrated when they see their teams shy away from blockbuster deals. Plenty of Cubs fans surely thought that Peavy was worth a handful of minor leaguers, but it was a series of seemingly unimportant details that led the Cubs to give up on the deal. Just as these chess Grandmasters had seen countless chess scenarios and knew how this match would play out, the Cubs seemed to recognize that further negotiations would simply have been a waste of time and energy.

Hat tip en passant to Deadspin.

I'm guessing this is the first, and likely last, time Jim Hendry has been compared to a chess grandmaster.

Well, that depends. Isn't he being compared to the loser here?

Well, I'm no expert, but given the level of penetration into Black's ranks that White's queen, rook, and bishop have achieved, along with the level of protection White's king has, I'd say it's pretty clear that Black's going to get f***ed fairly soon.

It's not a match, it's a game. Please, if you don't know chess, don't use chess analogies. It hurts our ears.

Yeah, I was always able to get pretty far with my extremely crude method of estimating positional advantage: which side has more pieces across the halfway line?

I'm getting a chess add at the bottom of this page. I said that I'd take up the game this year, but never followed through.

There's still time.

The "untrained eye" would count up the material, and overlook the positioning and activity/passivity of the pieces. Black has more material, but they can't do much but sit around. I am reminded of Dusty Baker's veteran-laden "F-troop."

The game in question was Game 10 of the World Championship. White (Kramnik) won this one, but had dropped three earlier games, so he lost the match to Anand.

Game 10 (mostly in plain English and diagrams)
