(Moving) Image of the Day: Billy Martin pitches Atari

Continuing this week’s theme of retro commercials (there was the Clemens “Zestfully Clean” ad in yesterday’s image of the day/International Roundup combo).

Game was pretty good.

Never played the game but I do remember the commercials. Martin is referencing George Plimpton's endorsement for Intellivision Baseball.

I never liked any of the baseball video games available back then, growing up in Miami you could actually play ball with friends year-round easily enough. I couldn't find a suitable replacement for Pitfall though.

The RealSports series were generally a massive improvement over the original 2600 games.

First version of baseball for the 2600, all your fielders (3, I think) moved as one when you moved the joystick, as I recall.

Hadn't seen that. Billy Martin should be in the HOF!

As sports pitchmen go, Martin wasn't bad.

Geez, Joba, you were within spitting distance of the Everglades. If you couldn't turn that into Pitfall, you were no kid.

Pitfall, by the way, rocked.

Never saw the game played.

Which commercial had Clemens plunging his arm into a barrel of rice?

I didn't punch that dogie!

Game was really good for Atari level computation. Probably the best of the Atari 2600 sports games.

Real Sports football wasn't too bad either for its time.

Decathlon was pretty good too in its own evil, blister inducing way.

The greatest Atari 2600 game of all time was, of course, Adventure.

Nah, the greatest Atari2600 game was Warlords. 4 kids, 4 paddles, 4 color graphics.

Yes, and in order to hit a home run you had to hit the ball directly over 2nd base and then past the outfielders.

Actually upon further reflection the most significant Atari 2600 game remains Custer's Revenge.

Intellivision made the best sports games.
