My question is, why the hell would anyone in Great Britain care about any of this?
I think I want a thread on this even more than one on Alan Schwarz's scouts vs. stats roundtable.
Actually, three times - once while dressed as the San Diego Chicken.
Matt Wieters.
Sadly, I cannot tell if this is a joke or not.
I'll say this much for Steve Garvey - he's got more class than Pete Rose.
But if you want him there in a chicken suit it'll be $300 extra.
Did he take a boat? Wasn't BA Baracus afraid to fly? Did Hannibal drug him up first?
Geez, it's only been a couple of years since the endless threads on whether Rose deserved to be banned for life finally faded away, after he admitted almost everything that he'd been denying for many years.
But he only betted FOR the Reds. How can you fault him for that? He has confidence in his team! Some nights, anyways.
When was that?
Mr. T's "Wave of <strike>Mutilation</strike> Flavor"
Butterbean knocking out James Thompson. Because it never stops being funny.
you new around here?
Kudos.
Absolutely. The people that clung to this until the bitter end looked like fools. I pity them.
Remember when Jim Grey was pilloried by popular opinion for his superb questioning?
I think it's more like five or six years since the last Rose apologists popped in here.
While I may be wrong, didn't most of the complaints related to the Grey interview have to do with timing, rather than with content?
Wasn't it during some sort of awards ceremony? It was sort of a blindside, IIRC.
It was at something like the "Major League Baseball Team of the Century (sponsored by MasterCard)", or some other ridiculous name like that, right before a World Series game.
I believe it was during one of those Pete's banned from baseball unless we need to trot him out for some all-time, van-voted things.
I don't know about more class - more shame, maybe.
I meant 'after the Rose interview'. The Aaron interview never happened, they went away to commercial or something else.
I'm mixed on the timing, as it appeared nobody in the media was willing to corner Rose up until that point.
Derek "DMZ" Zumsteg did a good job of silencing that choir. Remember when BPro was all free and mostly worth reading?
More phone calls on Father's Day, definitely.
I pray that I'll live long enough to see it, because as sure as night follows day, I know that this will come to pass: Pete Rose will eventually be elected to the Hall of Fame, at which point he will then publish yet another autobiography, in which he will claim that he lied when he said he bet on baseball just so he could get into the Hall.
And then the debates will start all over again.
I just know that this is how the story will play out.
Provided, of course, that the planet can keep dodging asteroids
This is certainly debated, but my view is that Grey gave Rose a golden opportunity to be contrite at the moment that the largest number of people would most likely accept his apology. We all had a chance to rid ourselves of this issue one and for all right there, I even would have said, let's move on. Instead Rose cried like a b-tch.
