M’s to name A’s bench coach Wakamatsu as manager

One got frazzled up

And then there was one.

After an extension search, which included seven interviews in four days, the Seattle Mariners are set to name Don Wakamatsu their new manager, a source told The Seattle Times. A news conference to announce the hiring is expected Wednesday.

Wakamatsu was the bench coach for the Oakland Athletics last season.

Seattle general manager Jack Zduriencik also interviewed St. Louis Cardinals third base coach Jose Oquendo, Boston Red Sox third base coach DeMarlo Hale, San Diego Padres Triple-A manager Randy Ready, Boston bench coach Brad Mills, Chicago White Sox bench coach and former Mariners infielder Joey Cora, and Arizona third base coach Chip Hale.

“I’ll tell you, I was impressed,” Zduriencik said earlier this week. “All were very well prepared. They had worked for this and earned the right to be here.”

In the end, it looks like Wakamatsu is Seattle’s man.

I wasn't aware that an "extension search" was allowed as part of an interview in today's legal climate.

I'm kinda depressed that I grew up watching so many of those managerial candidates come up to the big leagues.
