Murray Chass: NOT THE MAGNIFICENT METS

The Mets expect Maine to return to the rotation in 10 days to two weeks, and Minaya was cautiously optimistic about Perez (at left), who hasn’t pitched for the Mets since May 2.

“Perez finally had a good session yesterday,” Minaya said Friday. “He’s not ready now. It depends on how his knee responds. He’s on a cycle to pitch every five days. He threw well yesterday, 91, 92. That was good news.”

Minaya was not interested in getting into the sweepstakes for Pedro Martinez, who has been throwing for about half a dozen teams. The general manager, however, asked Cleveland about Cliff Lee, last year’s American League Cy Young award winner, but the Indians decided not to trade him.

In the meantime, while the Mets tread water awaiting the return of their injured starters, they need to figure out how to convert late-inning leads into victories. In the space of nine recent days, leading to the weekend, they lost four games which they led after the fifth inning.

The losses resulted from a combination of their relief pitchers giving up runs and their hitters shutting down and not producing late-inning add-on runs.

The Phillies, on the other hand, have demonstrated that they are a relentless and a resilient team, and even if the Mets remain in the race, they will have a difficult task in overcoming them.

The NL East is horrible and that's the biggest reason the Mets should be optimistic. In any other division, the Mets would be much further out than they are. The Mets also have some talent that's injured right now that might provide a boost later in the season. Manuel needs to give Stokes a chance to be the 8th inning guy but has inexplicably buried him. It also would be nice to see a reliever go multiple innings more often.

Can we start making NL Least jokes now? Or will people still claim the NL west is the most horrible division in baseball?

I wouldn't say that. The NL Central is the only division in which the fourth place team is within five games of first place. Considering that both the Mets and Phillies have had to deal with a lot of injuries to key players, the division is a lot better than it appears right now.

The NL East is 29 games under .500. That's horrible IMO.

5-4 vs. the Yanks. Should be 6-3.

Excluding today's games, the NL East sans the Nationals is three games over .500. The Nationals are 26 games under. Judging the NL East placing equal weight on the Nationals isn't such a good idea.

Of course, the other teams in the NL East have inflated their records by beating up on the Nationals. I agree the division is probably better than its record indicates but there's no denying that it has underachieved. I can't say any team in the division is happy with its performance so far this year.

Using BP's third-order wins, the NL East has the highest winning percentage in the National Leauge at .484. The NL West is behind at .482 and the NL Central is at .473. The AL, if you're interested: East, .567; Central, .496; West, .493. (Click here for a table)

A few questions from today's game:

1) Why didn't Manuel leave Stokes in? Parnell's been awful, and our core relievers could've used a break?
2) Why didn't Manuel leave Takahashi in? Green had pitches three straight games, and we weren't likely to win the game anyway.
3) Feliciano for the 6th straight day? To 4 batters? Really??

At this rate, our bullpen is going to be gassed by the All-Star break. Manuel even admitted after the game that he's been overusing guys. Unreal.

Oh, and one more question:
When are we going to get a real first baseman?

Based on their weekend, I'm not so sure about that. More than the Mets, perhaps.

Does anyone else find this hilarious? 5 of MLB's 6 divisions are below average according to BP? Not saying they're wrong, but it's pretty funny anyways...
