My Baseball Bias: In Defense Of Murray Chass

What the hell...even Fritz Honka had someone to defend him!

Some bloggers are going to take credit for Chass’s departure, who in a 2007 column wrote of his distaste for the statistics-based direction the game has moved to during the last decade. The website “Baseball Prospectus” penned an open letter to Chass and criticized him on this point. Like sheep, other internet writers followed suit. My point is, so what if Chass, who was inducted into the writers’ wing of the baseball Hall of Fame in 2003, didn’t care for what he labeled, “new-age baseball statistics?’’ To be honest, I’m not sure if VORP really adds anything, or simply confuses one’s enjoyment of this beautiful sport. Baseball is a game packed with numbers, some valuable and some not. Does every statistic have meaning?

Under General Manager Billy Beane, the Oakland Athletics have placed a heavy emphasis on on-base percentage, but have little or no concern for base stealing, or advancing a runner via a sacrifice bunt. What can we take from this? I think there were instances when had the A’s used the latter strategy, the team would have advanced in the playoffs. But they were stubborn, and paid the consequences. When Joe Torre was managing the Yankees to multiple World Series titles, he never had a problem moving a runner over or swiping a bag. Oh yeah, the A’s never got past the opening round, and only advanced to the second round in 2006 before getting swept by the Detroit Tigers.

No, not every statistic has meaning which is exactly the point that sabermetricians make. In fact, part of the reason so many traditionalists get up in arms is that the sabermetricians are exposing their favorite statistics as meaningless or incomplete. And true, not everybody has to appreciate VORP or any other advanced metric in order to enjoy the game. But if someone is going to criticize the stats, he is obligated at least to know something about them, and if he is going to write an article attacking those who develop and use them in order to appreciate and understand the game more fully, more deeply and with greater admiration for its complexity and beauty, he has an obligation to represent what they are doing fairly and accurately and not resort to foolish stereotypes or curmudgeonly dismissiveness built on ignorance. An ignorance of which he is proud apparently, by the way.

Yeah, stolen bases and sacrifice hits are the reason the A's didn't advance...

And one of those bunts in '03 was a 2-out squeeze bunt by Adam Melhuse. It was creepy.

1) It was Ramon Hernandez
2) It was teh awesome!
3) It wasn't a sacrifice--there were 2 out.

And how did Chavez get to 3B to score the winning run? A stolen base.

The problem isn't that Murray Chass thinks sabermetrics makes baseball unenjoyable; one of the precise things that piss him off so badly is that most people really don't care about his personal opinions about why baseball is cool. The problem is that Murray Chass refuses to tolerate anybody thinking baseball viewed through sabermetrics can still be enjoyable. It's hard to defend intolerance.
