NBC Sports/Pouliot: Royals’ Moore lacks vision, should lack job

Disastrous.

It’s the word I used to describe the Royals’ offseason at the time that they made their one positive move. It is likely that getting Zack Greinke signed to a four-year deal likely will benefit the Royals’ long-term future more than the rest of the moves combined will take away from it. Still, it didn’t have to be like this.

Let’s review. Here are all the notable moves the team made over the winter:

...

12/11/2008 - Signed LHP Horacio Ramirez to a one-year, $1.8 million contract.

The first of two completely unreasonable moves. One could actually justify giving Ramirez a major league deal to pitch in relief, but the Royals signed him to start and gave him a rotation spot even after he performed as poorly as any player in the Cactus League. Fortunately, they did replace him after just one turn through the rotation, cutting their losses.

...

12/13/2008 - Signed RHP Kyle Farnsworth to a two-year, $9.25 million contract with a club option for 2011.

The second horrific move. The market for average relievers had already been set when Bob Howry jumped on a one-year, $2.75 million offer from the Giants. It never became clear what team the Royals competed against to sign Farnsworth.

Wow, I knew the Royals employed Horacio, but I figured he was an NRI that hung around or something. I was already off the Moore wagon, now I am setting it ablaze. What a joke.

It's funny that Farnsworth, despite all the crap he takes, has actually been pretty good this year. And Juan Cruz hasn't.

Farnsworth: 25Ks and 6 walks in 23-1/3 innings pitched; 4.24 ERA. And only 2 HRs allowed.

Cruz: 22Ks and 18 walks in 31 innings pitched; 5.23 ERA.

Before checking, my perception was that Farnsworth was sucking. I think that's due solely to his sucky performance on opening day.

And one strained groin

I think it has more to do with the insane unclutch stats.

Batters are 8-for-12 with two walks off him in "high leverage" situations, including both of his homeruns.

In tie games they are 5-for-6 off Farnsworth. A .896 OPS when the game is within 4 runs, and a .428 OPS when the game is not. A 1.942 OPS in 13 high leverage PA's, and a .431 OPS in 83 low leverage PAs.

That kind of situational pitching is going to piss off any fan-base, small sample or not. Especially when he came into the season with something of a rep as an unclutch pitcher.

And a bird attack, and a dog attack.

Hey, at least he's keeping us entertained!

Depending on when/how the groin strain happened, that could've been pretty clutch...

Farnsy has been pitching in low leverage situations since mid-April. Cruz (and Jamey Wright) have been the ones called in for every jam. And they've been failing pretty often.
