NESN: John Henry: Sometimes, Sports Really Are Just Fun and Games

He could whistle, he could sing, he could blog.

I’ve been asked to write a blog for the New England Sports Network. This is my first blog.

...So let’s be clear.  This blog will often be written with a sense of humor.  And it will be controversial for at least a couple of reasons.  Number one—I’m writing it.  Number two—I have had a lifelong tendency to be blunt.

I’ll try to write about meaningful subjects and provide meaningful information when I can about what I can. Most of it will simply be my opinions because I don’t have all of the answers regarding the Boston Red Sox, Roush Fenway Racing, Fenway Sports Group, NESN, iRacing.com, JWH or Fenway Park—they’re too large and dynamic—each in their own right.  But I’ll try here at NESN.com to give you a view on these entities from my perspective.

I stopped Tweeting a couple of months ago and stopped updating Facebook at the same time for reasons I’ll go into in my next entry. Go Sox fans!

He stoppped because he made a fool of himself.

It takes time and careful thought to compose 140 word snippets that both say something and don't sound ridiculous. I doubt Mr. Henry has either available in abundance.

Bunyon, so you believe John Henry has limited ability to think? Thats a cursious thing to say about a self made billionaire.

Theo ran into his office and held up a monkey costume and said "I'm this f@cking close, man. Knock it off."

I think he was saying that Henry has limited ability to think carefully, in a short span of time, about what he should say. Or, to put it another way, Henry is a human being.

I hope that use of the term "blog" in the second sentence doesn't refer to that particular post. I absolutely despise the use of the word blog in that way. A "blog" is the entire enterprise. You have a blog at NESN. You write "posts" or maybe "articles" on your blog. You do not write "blogs" on your blog. If you have "blogs" that means you have two distinct urls at which you blog.

Think of it like a ship's captain: he has one log in which he writes entries. He does not write multiple "logs."

Okay, wtf? Two posts from two different people ranting about blog vs. blogpost (EDIT) at the exact same time, to the minute, on separate threads? Zeitgeist here we come.

C'mon, slap spolier tags on that!

MHS - That seems a pretty implausible interpretation of bunyon's comment. I mean, very few self-made billionaires are also successful or popular writers. Oversimplifying, the skills that make you a good writer, in whatever context, aren't the same skills that make you ultra-rich.
   12. Jeff K. Posted: September 14, 2009 at 12:25 PM (#3321116)
Actually, I had the same interpretation as Matt when first reading it. How this impacts the plausibility of that thought is left to the reader.

Great minds!

I'm gonna go write a blog about it.

Admit it. The two of you are just alts.

NESN's already had a dating show called Sox Appeal.

Thank you Craig (and whoever wrote the other post in whatever thread it's in), you're singing my song.

According to Forbes, there's only one, and I don't think she's really into baseball.

Steven King's gotta be close. At the end of the day, there is very, very little difference between hundred-millionaire, and billionaire. The difference only becomes interesting when you have enough billions to affor your own baseball team.

I thought Oprah was a White Sox fan?

As for the NESN blog. Why? There's no more wretched hive of scum and villainy then the NESN comments sections.

5 has my meaning right. As I also prove with my post, it's very hard to be thorough, careful and meaningful in 140 words. It takes a lot of time and/or a very talented writer - and I do doubt that John Henry has either (I doubt he's a great writer and I doubt he takes a lot of time on these. However, I don't mean that critically). Hence the absurdity of tweeting as a meaningful activity. It's fine for a quick note or stream of consciousness communication, but those will rarely be seriously meaningful.

He seems to be a big fan of his own sense of humor.
