Newday: Davidoff - Mets meet with Boras to discuss A-Rod, who is apple of Angels’ eye

Omar Minaya and his lieutenants met with Scott Boras, A-Rod’s agent, Tuesday night, here at the general managers’ meetings, to discuss the superstar third baseman. Boras also represents free-agent pitchers Eric Gagne and Kyle Lohse. A person familiar with the Mets’ thinking said the club is “not closing the door” on the idea of signing A-Rod.
...
SI.com reported that the Red Sox were set to meet with Boras Wednesday night to discuss A-Rod. But the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have been long believed the favorites to land A-Rod, and they have done nothing to discourage the perception… According to one major-league official, Angels owner Arte Moreno assured commissioner Bud Selig, with whom he is close, that he wouldn’t obliterate spending records to land A-Rod.
...
The Mets, meanwhile, have interest in Carlos Silva, arguably the best starting pitcher available on the free-agent market. There are pitchers potentially available in trades—Jose Contreras and Jon Garland of the White Sox, Joe Blanton of the A’s and Cliff Lee of the Indians—but the Mets have few trading chips that intrigue other clubs. “I’ve always felt that it’s easier to get a free agent done than a trade done,” Minaya said.
...
If Posada goes back to the Yankees, the Mets will look more seriously at Yorvit Torrealba, who puts up very modest offensive numbers but would be a defensive upgrade over Paul Lo Duca.

More A-Rod and other rumors…

What do people have against Ramon Castro? Is his defense terrible? Shouldn't he be a hot commodity?

Castro has an arthritic back (must be due to carrying that big head) and has missed quite a bit of time the last few seasons despite being a backup. If you acquire him to be the starter, it would be an excellent idea to get a good backup. His defense has generally been good but was pretty bad last year. The guy can hit though.

I like Silva but that contract is going to be scary.

I am a huge Castro fan- I wrote my first column about him back in 2003. But I think you are asking for trouble banking on him with the back- a Torrealba backup plan with Castro as catcher is a nice fallback position if Posada is not available- and might be preferable, if it takes 5 years to bring in Posada.

To stay on-topic, what is the most likely unlikely A-Rod destination, I wonder? Cubs, Phillies, Yankees? A-Rod going somewhere as boring as the Angels makes baby Jesus cry. Sorry AL west fans.

Cubs won't do it unless they get a new owner who allows it.

And the word is that there won't be a new owner until after the 2008 season starts.

Baby Jesus can cry all he wants, Anaheim is still A-Rod's most likely destination. Signing A-Rod is the easiest (albeit most exensive) way for the Angels to maintain their stranglehold on that division for the next few years.

Yeah, that's the word I've been hearing about the ownership situation there. I guess if I was the current ownernship and baseball, I'd try and do something to get the slowness of corporate America to get the hell moving over there. Or would that be collusion? Anyhow, I'm still rooting for anywhere but the Angels. Partially because you can see the future spooling out there already: The Angels and the Yankees meet in the playoffs and the Yankees finally beat the opponent that squiks them out the most, and A-Rod goes 2-15.

The most unlikely A-Rod destination has to be Texas

The Angels are boring? Gee, I've never heard anyone describe taking the extra base as "boring." And ARod in Anaheim would make the Angels un-boring (if such a word exists).

But to answer your question, I suppose it would be the Phillies. He would complete a remarkable infield and probably thrive on offense at the Cit. Would it be the most comfortable environment for him? Probably not, but he might find it surprisingly easier than New York or Boston. However, Phils management may still have sour feelings with Boras over J.D. Drew, so this conjecture could be moot.

I would have to say the most unlikely place is Florida, being that they're currently trying to trade away their star third baseman since his 2nd arbitration year will be too rich for their blood. ARod would almost double their payroll. Easily the least likely destination, unless trading Cabrera is all a plot to free up cash and third base to bring ARod home to finish his career in Miami!

If the second part of that is true, the first part isn't.

Yeah, that seemed like a disconnect to me too, Vaux.

#5, just because you're too lazy to pay attention to American League baseball on the West Coast doesn't make you the final authority on what is "boring" and what is "exciting."

East Coast bias indeed.

Perhaps he meant boring in the sense that ARod to Angels is too logical. It's too neat. There is no mystery or suspense in it.

The Angels are one of my favorite teams to watch. But as a Mets fan I am probably somehow reversed biased into thinking that - the AL West teams have the least possible connection to my team and thus seem really new and exciting and exotic when I get to watch them.

Angels are the 30th most boring team in major league baseball.

Geez, #14, I've been to games at Safeco, the KingDome, and A's stadium multiple times.

Thank you, #15, that was it exactly - the first part anyhow.

Also, I lived in the Anaheim area. I'm sorry, but I cannot be convinced it's not a boring place.

(I didn't ask for the LEAST likely place he'd end up, I asked for the most likely of the less likely places. OK, it was like following Pynchon, but that's what I meant. I'd kill for him to be a Pirate or Royal, but that's just not going to happen.)
